Spring, 2017

Hello Friends of Ready Readers!

Spring has almost passed, and Ready Readers celebrates another year (our 20th year!) inspiring our youngest children to love books and reading.  This year, 500 trained, supported and mentored volunteers read aloud high-quality children's literature every week to 10,000 preschool-age children, ages 2-5, who attend 189 early childhood centers in the St. Louis area.

This week, our volunteers will pass out their last gift books (each child and their teacher receives 6 or 7 new, personalized books a year), will give each child a certificate congratulating them for being “on their way to becoming a Great Reader,” and write thank you letters to their classroom teachers. Many of our volunteers will also attend the preschool graduations and receive many “thanks” from the children, teachers and centers.

On Friday, April 28, we thanked our amazing volunteers for their
dedication, hard work and commitment to Ready Readers.
Special awards were given to

Lesley Wandling –  Our 2017 Distinguished Long-Term Reader

Candice Barchenger – Our 2017 Exceptional Volunteer of the Year

Robert Becker, Kirkwood Youth Service – 2017 Outstanding Community Partner

Allison Devitre & Joan Ragda-Heath, Monsanto – Our 2017 Outstanding Corporate Partner

And, on Saturday, April 29, Ready Readers along with the LUME Institute, ARCHS, and United 4 Children, thanked more than 200 outstanding early childhood educators at the St. Louis Science Center at our Annual Early Educator Appreciation Event.

This summer, we will be looking at our measurable early literacy outcomes and events, and plan for an even greater, more impactful 2017-2018 school year!  If you want to become a volunteer for Ready Readers, visit our new website at www.readyreaders.org for more information and an application.
