Fall 2016
Hello Friends of Ready Readers!

Who is ready to roll up their sleeves and get ready to work to inspire our
youngest children to become readers?  More than 500 of our volunteers read every week to a classroom of preschool-age children who live in poverty.  You can make a difference now!  Volunteer for Ready Readers, and inspire children to become readers, thinkers, and learners. readyreaders.org/volunteer

What is the key to the success of Ready Readers?  Our success lies in the committed, consistent, caring relationships that our volunteers have with the children whom they read to every week and their teachers.  We also believe in giving all children new, high-quality, personalized books that they can read over and over again at home with their families.

85% of the children who participate in Ready Readers enter kindergarten with the early literacy skills needed to become readers.  Beyond our programming, we as a society are also making progress.  Studies by the National Center for Education Statistics show the gap in school readiness between rich and poor children entering kindergarten closed significantly - by 10 to 16 percent - from 1998 to 2010.  The change is attributed to improvements in the skills of low-income children, who are "getting more of what political scientist Robert Putnam calls '
Goodnight Moon time' than they did in the 1990s."

We need continue to do more.  And, we know real change is never easy,  It requires hard work.  Are you ready to make a difference?

With gratitude,
Lisa Greening, Executive Director
