Doctoral students assist UNESCO's Teacher Task Force in Cambodia
Lamar University students assist with class in Cambodia
Lamar University students recently visited Cambodia to participate in the 9th annual UNESCO Policy Forum of the International Task Force on Teachers.

UNESCO is the United Nations agency charged with instituting and administering programs for cooperative, coordinated action by member states in education, science and the arts.

LU Students Kelly Grogan and Jessica Hale, both of the Apple Distinguished Educator cohort of the Doctorate in Education Leadership program, and project coordinator, George Saltsman, research assistant professor in Education Leadership, provided advising and assistance in constructing a social media platform, live streaming of the forum, and launching a platform for online dialogue and discussion regarding international policy creation.

"Providing hands-on experience through participation in global education events such as this is what makes the global focus of the Lamar University Doctorate in Education Leadership unique," said Kaye Shelton, associate professor of Education Leadership and director of the Doctorate in Education Leadership program. "The best way to prepare future global leaders is have them collaborate within the global education community." Read more.

Exploring nanomedicine and beyond in Taiwan
Image of Nic Nikoloutsos, Lamar University Student

Senior electrical engineering and physics dual degree student and double major in mathematics, Nic Nikoloutsos, originally traveled to Taipei, Taiwan this summer to work under Che-Ming Jack Hu on experimental procedures in nanomedicine at Academia Sinica as one of the two 2016 David J. Beck Fellows.

However, while in Taiwan, Nikoloutsos' research unexpectedly veered from the nanoparticle projects he and Hu had originally planned, forming a whole new summer experience for the Vidor native.

He worked on nanoparticle research for three weeks out of eleven, and the remaining weeks he designed experiments and worked on a special topic that is likely to result in publication. From collaborating on research to learning basic Mandarin, he said his experiences in the lab far exceeded his expectations.

"At most medium to large institutions, I would just now, as a senior, be receiving the opportunities and building the relationships I had as a freshman at LU. I feel I have benefited from Lamar so much already, but here, new doors continue to open," said Nikoloutsos. Read more.
