Lamar University dedicates
Wayne A. Reaud Building

Lamar University formally dedicated the Wayne A. Reaud Building on Friday, December 2, 2016 before an appreciative crowd of university faculty, staff, students, and administrators joined by alumni and many others from the Southeast Texas Community.

The three-story building named in honor of nationally known attorney and Lamar University Distinguished Alumnus Wayne A. Reaud '71 houses administrative offices, marketing and communications, institutional research and reporting, information technology functions, reception areas, and the Reaud Honors College.

"I want you all to know that you don't need magic to change the world," Reaud said, addressing the students in the crowd. "All of the power we need we can find within ourselves. But we do need education. When we combine this inner strength with quality education, we truly can change the world."

Lamar University is truly grateful for the incredible support from all of those who made the formation of the Wayne A. Reaud Building possible.

This state-of-the-art building "creates a fantastic learning environment that will help Lamar University attract some of the very best students to the university," said James Marquart, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. Read more.

Lamar University students Linda Pham, a mathematics major from Bridge City, and Kay-Alana Turner, a business management and Spanish major from Lumberton, have been awarded the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to study abroad during the Spring 2017 semester. The purpose of the scholarship is to better prepare U.S. students to thrive in a global economy.

Pham will study on exchange at Seoul National University of Science and Technology in South Korea and Turner will study on exchange at ESC Rennes School of Business in France.

Congressman Benjamin Gilman established this scholarship award because he believes that study abroad is a special experience for all students to participate. "Living and learning in a vastly different environment of another nation not only exposes our students to alternate views, but also adds an enriching social and cultural experience," he said. Read more.

Brad Weatherholt graduated from Lamar University in 2011 with his bachelors degree and in 2012 with his M.B.A. He started his business, Ministry of Cinema, shortly after graduation and is now celebrating the release of his first film, The Prequels Strike Back: A Fan's Journey, a documentary over the controversial prequels to the Star Wars saga.

Weatherholt attended Lamar University as a Mirabeau Scholar, spent his time actively participating in the Honors Student Association, and graduated Summa Cum Laude as an Honors College Graduate.

"Lamar gave me access to the people and equipment I needed to launch my career. Almost all of my films have involved people I met at Lamar," Weatherholt said.

Weatherholt and his team from Ministry of Cinema traveled the country, interviewing fans and filming what would unexpectedly become a highly anticipated Star Wars fan-famous documentary.

The Prequels Strike Back "documentary aims to provide fresh perspectives from academics and fans that might have been missed over the chatter on the Internet," Weatherholt said. Read more.
