A New Year also means the start of a new legislative session. In this month's Top 10 Talk, Commissioner Margie Vandeven discusses the need to work together during the next five months and beyond.


Missouri Teacher Website
The Department recently launched a new website devoted to celebrating the successes of our state’s educators. “Missouri Teachers” features stories about classroom teachers, administrators and guest columns from some of the state’s top educators. It is a great resource for current teachers and those interested in pursuing a career in education. Check it out and help us spread the word.

State Launches New Top 10 by 20 Data Dashboard
The Department provided the State Board of Education with an update regarding Top 10 by 20. The presentation included a new dashboard that provides a graphical look at the academic progress Missouri students are making. The dashboard highlights four key student outcomes that are used to measure progress toward Missouri’s Top 10 by 20 goals.

Goal #1- All Missouri students will graduate college and career ready.

State Board Receives Update on Missouri Learning Standards

The Department recently presented an update to the State Board regarding public comment on the proposed Missouri Learning Standards. The proposed standards must receive Board approval by May 2016.

Missouri Board Weighs in on Every Student Succeeds Act
The Department recently presented the State Board of Education with an overview of new federal legislation dubbed the Every Student Succeeds Act, or ESSA. ESSA replaces the No Child Left Behind Act. Department staff indicated that they do not expect major shifts in Missouri’s current education policy as a result of ESSA.

Free DRDP Training Available
The Department and WestEd will host a free DRDP training on Jan. 22. The webinar will provide a general overview of DRDPTech, including how to rate measures and run reports. Please click here to register and for more information.

Conference on the Young Years
Conference on the Young Years will take place March 10-12 at Tan-Tar-A Resort in Osage Beach. Registration is now open. Goal 3 - Missouri will prepare, develop and support effective educators.

Educator Equity in Missouri
Missouri recently created a plan to recruit, prepare and retain effective teachers for all public schoolchildren in the state, especially in high-poverty, high-minority or rural districts. In this month’s Educator Equity Update, we take a look at how two Missouri universities are working to prepare and place teacher candidates in urban school settings.

2016 Interface Conference
The 2016 Interface Conference for mathematics and science educators will take place Feb. 18-23 at Tan-Tara-A Resort in Osage Beach. This year’s theme is “Conceptual Understanding: Engagement + Enthusiasm = Empowerment.” Registration is now open.

Powerful Learning Conference
Registration for the Powerful Learning Conference is now open. The conference will take place Jan. 24-25 at Tan-Tar-A Resort in Osage Beach. This year’s event features more than 50 breakout sessions and several nationally known speakers.

Listserv for Teachers in Missouri Public Schools
The Department has created a listserv for public school teachers. Teachers are encouraged to sign up to receive emails about policies, certification information, Department initiatives and news impacting education in the state.
