It is hard to believe that the final weeks of summer are here. Summer is busier than ever for students, parents and teachers. Whatever happened to the "lazy" days of summer? Read more in this month's Top 10 Talk with Commissioner.

Educators Show Overwhelming Support for Top 10 by 20 Goals
Recent surveys of educators show an overwhelming amount of support for Top 10 by 20’s three main goals. More than 98 percent of administrators believe it is important for Missouri to have effective educators. More than 95 percent of teachers believe kindergarten readiness is important. Nearly 10,000 administrators, teachers and public information officers from Missouri completed the survey.

New Listserv for Teachers in Missouri Public Schools
The Department has created a listserv for public school teachers. Teachers are encouraged to sign up to receive emails about policies, certification information, Department initiatives and news affecting education in the state.

Cooperative Conference for School Administrators
The 54th Annual Cooperative Conference for School Administrators will take place
July 26-28 in Columbia. The conference will feature nationally recognized speakers as well as numerous breakout sessions. Registration will be accepted through the start of the conference.

Goal 1- All Missouri students will graduate college and career ready.

Missouri Graduate to Compete in WorldSkills Competition in Brazil

Brock Miesner of St. Ann will compete on the United States team in the World Skills Competition Aug. 11-16 in Sao Paolo, Brazil. Miesner is a graduate of Perryville High School and will compete in the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning category.

Read MOre, Missouri!
Missouri students can keep their reading skills sharp over the summer months by joining the “Read MOre, Missouri!” reading challenge. The program is an effort to prevent “summer slide,” the loss of learning skills that many students experience during their break from classes. Find out how you can participate.

Missouri Learning Standards Newsletter
The Department produces a newsletter devoted to learning standards in Missouri. This e-newsletter keeps Missourians updated on the latest information related to Missouri Learning Standards and includes blog posts and videos. Helping Young Children Thrive Series 3 Now Available
How do you help parents, parent educators and teachers understand how they can best help young children thrive? Seeing is believing. Zero to Three National Center for Infants, Toddlers and Families has developed a series of videos to support school readiness from the beginning.

DRDP Training Available in August
Desired Results Developmental Profile (DRDP) training will be available in August. DRDP is a research-based, observation readiness tool adopted as the Department’s recommended early childhood instrument. Visit our website for more information.

Missouri Teachers Win National Math and Science Award
Kathleen Dwyer of the Maplewood Richmond Heights School District and Ruth Knop from the Parkway School District were recently named winners of the 2015 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. Find out more about this prestigious honor.

Background Checks Enhanced to Provide Faster Results

As part of ongoing efforts to protect the safety of Missouri children, school districts and charter schools across the state now have online access to background checks for school employees and applicants. The new Highway Patrol system allows schools to monitor fingerprinting for their employee and receive background check results quickly.

Measures of Student Growth in the Evaluation Process
The student growth component of the evaluation process begins in the 2015-16 school year. This requirement applies to teachers of all grades levels and instructing in all areas of content. An overview of new materials and training will be provided at the upcoming Administrators Conference in July, and will be available throughout the school year to all charter schools and school districts by regional service providers. MOST Undergoes "Continuous Improvement Process"
Missouri Observation Simulation Tool (MOST) is in the process of being updated and improved to better meet the needs of Missouri administrators and teacher evaluators. The updates will be in place this summer, and an overview will be provided at the Administrator Conference in July. Additional features will include new videos, a stronger emphasis on effective instructional practice and opportunities to calibrate an evaluator’s skills to an embedded observation form. Goal 4 - The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education will improve departmental efficiency and operational effectiveness.

Rules Review Underway        

The General Assembly has instituted a five (5)-year rolling review of existing rules that began July 1 as set forth in Section 536.175 RSMo. The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education will begin this process for rules promulgated with their designated Title of the Code of State Regulations with a sixty (60)-day public comment period.
