Ella Baker Elementary staff get the first glimpse inside their new school

Staff smiling in library.

Staff entering new school.Teachers and staff were all smiles when they arrived at Ella Baker Elementary School. The new school, under construction at Redmond Ridge East, will help ease overcrowding by providing space for 690 elementary students. Teachers will welcome the school’s first students in less than four months.

It didn’t take long for the music teacher to find her classroom. Looking out over the gym/cafeteria she happily exclaimed, “I don’t have a tissue!” The elevated classroom can also be converted to a stage.

The school’s future librarian visited the site in February to provide feedback on utilizing the bright, welcoming space. School libraries teach students in grades K-5 to use and think critically about books, media and technology.

Ella Baker Elementary is one of eight projects funded by the 2016 bond to reduce overcrowding.

Early work begins on new Peter Kirk Elementary

Clearing and grading at Kirk Elementary.

Students at Peter Kirk Elementary School got a ball bonanza after blackberry bushes were removed in preparation for construction on their new school. Crews returned dozens of playground balls that had been lost in the bushes so students could again play with them during recess. Construction workers are clearing and grading the property for utility installation. The new school will have space for 690 students.

New Middle School - Redmond Ridge

Photos of insulation, three classroom levels, concrete wall for ball wall.

  • Insulation and GreenGirts are going in at the new middle school. GreenGirts are sustainably made with recycled glass. Girts fit in between wall panels to help reduce heat transfer between the building’s interior and exterior.
  • Work is progressing on the middle school’s three classroom levels, including the installation of exterior siding and window glass.
  • Concrete walls were poured for the playground’s ball wall and the service yard, where vehicles can load and unload.

Juanita High School

  • Concrete for building footings was poured for the new main office.
  • The building footprint is taking shape between the existing main building and Field House. The project team is getting ready to demolish the north wing and theater during summer break.
