New Elementary School - North Redmond

Construction continues at the New Elementary School in North Redmond. Steel construction is expected to begin in the next 30 days. Two newly installed underground vaults will keep storm water clean at the school. The north vault has 138 panels with a capacity of 920,000 gallons of water (that’s the size of 1.4 Olympic-sized swimming pools). Watch a time-lapse of the construction on YouTube. This vault was built between August 14-22, 2017. Because this vault was built out of pre-fabricated panels, the installation time was shortened by four months.

Planning Principal Karen Barker is working to hire staff. Principal Barker is in the process of interviewing and hiring 12 general education staff members, and one of each specialist (counselor, PE teacher, music teacher, librarian and Special Education teacher). Hiring is being done with internal candidates for now, with additional information nights for current staff members coming soon.

New Elementary School - Redmond Ridge East

Construction continues at the New Elementary School in Redmond Ridge East. Steel is expected to arrive at the site at the end of this month. Planning Principal Kim Bilanko and her eight newly-hired staff members recently had an opportunity to tour the site. Principal Bilanko is also in the process of interviewing and hiring 12 general education staff members, and one of each specialist (counselor, PE teacher, music teacher, librarian and Special Education teacher). Hiring is being done with internal candidates for now, with additional information nights for current staff members coming soon.

New Middle School - Redmond Ridge

Construction of the New Middle School in Redmond Ridge continues. Part of the site preparation required the crushing of large rocks. This took place in August. At this and other bond project sites, contractors are installing geothermal wells. Geothermal (aka "ground source") is a sustainable way to provide conditioned air for thermal comfort in a way that reduces operational utility costs and maintenance. Construction of geothermal wells began in August and continues this month at the site.

Juanita High School

Students and staff returned to campus on September 5. Construction crews worked to clearly separate the construction activities from school activity. This was done with clear signage and marked pathways for students to walk. The emphasis is on safety for all students and staff. Due to construction activities, there is limited parking available on campus. Students have been encouraged to take the bus, walk or carpool to school . The district sent out two short videos from Facebook Live that showed students what to expect when navigating the campus. Those videos can be found on YouTube here.

The Kirk Elementary Construction Input team includes the principal, Monica Garcia; staff members; and parents. This project should move into the construction documents and permitting process soon, with construction expected to begin this spring.

Explorer Community School

Student at Explorer Community School moved into their new modular classrooms last week. A grand opening is being planned for the first week of October. A video from Facebook Live in August shows the modular units being placed on the campus. Here is a link to that video: https://youtu.be/io_0V8yHC_c. A slideshow containing aerial photos of this project are available on the Explorer Community School project page on the district website.
