LU's STEM Class Broadens Area Teachers' Knowledge of Engineering
MD Ashraful Hoque and Christopher Galmore - STEM Lessons
High School STEM teachers recently participated in Lamar University's Research Experience for Teachers put on by the College of Engineering. The program instructs teachers in engineering research in advanced design and manufacturing. This six week course was made possible by a grant from the National Science Foundation and included workshops, curriculum development, seminars and field trips to local industry. The research experience is then incorporated into high school curriculum that meets Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills Standard.

"The program has let me have a little more exposure to research than I ever would have in the classroom and gives me something to bring back to my students," said Sheri (Vize) Furby '96, '19, A STEM teacher at Port Neches-Groves ISD with more than 20 years of experience. Read more.

Year in Wales Enriches College Experience
LU Student Hannah Carlson studies abroad in Wales
Hanna Carlson, a senior Lamar University corporate communication major from Houston, spent one year of her undergraduate career as a student at Swansea University, a public research university in Swansea, Wales, thanks to support from LU's study abroad program.

Her early interest in making study abroad a part of her time in college was born of family experience. As a young child, she lived in Kampala, Uganda, where her parents served as missionaries from 2000-2002. Desiring a very immersive experience, Carlson sought semester-long options rather than shorter trips. "I specifically chose to do a longer than normal study abroad, because I really wanted to immerse myself into the culture of where I was staying," Carlson said.

While not surprised to find many U.S. case studies in her Public Relations courses, Carlson was pleased to hear a reference to research by Natalie Tindall, department chair and associate professor of communication at LU, during one of her lectures. "Going abroad by myself opened my eyes to how different the world can be," she said. Read more.

Professional Certificate in Port Management Now Available Online
Lamar University Center for Advances in Port Management
The American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) has developed a new professional certificate program in conjunction with Lamar University's Center for Advances in Port Management. The Industry Recognized Port Certificate provides industry new comers and junior-mid-level port staff with fundamental knowledge of the port industry and introduces participants to AAPA and the greater port professional community.

"President Evans had been to the state legislature to ask if there existed an advanced degree for all ports and terminals along the Sabine and Neches, and the answer was no," said Erik Stromberg, Executive Director of the Center for Advances in Port Management at LU. "I have been in the industry for 35 years and recognize that this is a problem that needed a solution. So, when Dr. Evans came up with the certificate program to answer the need in Southeast Texas, he was also responding to the needs of the industry as a whole."

According to Stromberg the benefits of the certificate program will not only affect the port industry and economy of Southeast Texas, but the nation as a whole. Read more.
