Self-Healing Material
Has Limitless Applications
Nano-Micro-Macro Manufacturing Group
An exciting, new material has been developed by a team of researchers led by Professor Keivan Davami, the director of Nano-Micro-Macro manufacturing group at Lamar University. Using advanced, laser-assisted stereolithography (SLA) additive manufacturing techniques, the team was successful in fabricating a material capable of autonomic self-repair facilitated by nothing more than exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light. Their groundbreaking work has been published in Scientific Reports, part of the prestigious Nature publishing group.

According to their research, this novel material draws inspiration from nature. A series of reservoirs trap the self-healing resin within the material itself, only releasing upon the event of fracture. This mechanism is analogous to microvascular blood networks present in human skin that facilitate the tissue restoration upon injury. The benefits of this material will be especially impactful for everyday items prone to failure from tools, eyeglasses and device components to soles of shoes, which can be quickly and easily repaired by the simple exposure to UV light. Alumni Spotlight
Chris Araj '07
Future Leader of Audiology
Chris Araj Spotlight
Chris Araj graduated from Lamar University in 2007 with a B.S. in Communication Disorders and in 2011, obtained a Doctorate in Audiology at Towson University. During his time at LU, Araj had the opportunity to study abroad in the United Kingdom where he learned more about aural rehabilitation.

Throughout his collegiate career at LU, Araj met many people who were influential in his life, but there was one person who stood out the most. "All of my professors were influential, but one person in particular was Laura Polich, Ph.D. Since she is dual certified in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology, she was able to give me a unique perspective when I was deciding on my future career path," said Araj. His original plan was not to go into Audiology, but to be an interpreter for the Deaf. Araj says that his professors at Lamar University did a wonderful job preparing him for his future studies and career. "LU prepared me for graduate school by laying the foundation for a future career in Audiology. I was able to take an Advanced Audiology course at the undergraduate level which gave me a jump start to my doctoral work in Audiology," Araj said.

After obtaining his doctorate and working at the Texas Medical Center for several years, Araj opened up this own practice, Pearland Hearing Aids & Audiology. In 2018, he was named a Jerger Future Leader of Audiology by the American Academy of Audiology. "After serving as President of the Texas Academy of Audiology, it was humbling to be recognized on a national level by the American Academy of Audiology." Araj said. Read more.
