Message from Amy Branson, Principal
Hello South Middle Families,

Let’s start with a celebration--as you saw in a recent email, South Middle reached our 1,000 can goal for our Parkway Food Pantry! This is just one more example of South Middle’s demonstration of empathy. The teachers are also contributing to the District’s “Stuff the Turkey” event with gift cards for our families in need. If we reach our school goal, you just might see some photos of three administrators dressed as turkeys. :)

I’d also like to remind you that on Monday, we will be honoring our veterans with cookies, lemonade, and an assembly! If you did not receive the email or have not yet RSVP’d (Monday, November 11, 2:00 p.m. to 3:15 p.m.) and you are still planning to invite a veteran or to attend our celebration yourself, please email Jo Catalano (jcatalano@parkwayschools.net).

I hope you have a restful and joyful Thanksgiving break.

With Patriot Pride,

Amy Branson

Veterans' Day Celebration
First, if you are or know a veteran, please save Monday, November 11, from 2:00-3:15 p.m. to join us for our Veterans’ Day Celebration. We will have cookies and lemonade in the pavilion beginning at 2:00 p.m., and then we will gather in our gymnasium to honor our veterans! Please RSVP to Josephine Catalano (jcatalano@parkwayschools.net) with the names of people who will be joining us for the celebration and with whom they are connected at South Middle. When responding, please also indicate if someone in your party may have a difficult time navigating stairs.

Please remember to bring your driver’s license or other state identification card and check in with our front office before joining our celebration.

Secondly, we would like to showcase pictures of our veterans at the assembly. Please send pictures of your veterans to Amy Branson (abranson@parkwayschools.net) and include their name, rank, branch of service, and the person they are connected to at South Middle. We would love it if the picture is of the veteran with the person to whom they are connected!

If you have any questions, please call Jo Catalano, at 314-415-7202.

Family Assistance Fund
The South Middle counseling department has a family assistance fund which is used to help families in need. We are able to provide a variety of support and assistance with the money in this fund. The last few months of the year can be especially challenging for families. If you are in need, please reach out to either counselor. If you would like to help support our South Middle community, you can make a donation at the school store for our fund. Contact us anytime with questions.

Parkway Food Pantry
The Parkway food pantry is available to all members of the Parkway community. There are two ways parents and students can let the pantry know they would like food; they can contact their Parkway area social worker, or they can contact the food pantry directly. The pantry is always taking donations in the form of monetary donations, food items, and personal care products.

Band Notes
It was a Spook-tacular night on October 29 as all of the beginning band students held their first concert at South Middle School. Band members dressed in costumes including characters from Stranger Things, Harry Potter, Bob Ross and some lifeguards. It was a fun evening where the beginning band showcased what they have been working on in class. The evening ended with the song Scooby Doo, Where Are You? The students were amazing and should be extremely proud of themselves. The concert also hosted a Trick or Eat table to help the school collect food for the local pantry. One hundred and twenty-one canned items were donated. Thank you to all who participated.

Congratulations to Haley Parks, Eric Walk and Sophie Kraujalis who auditioned for and made All-Suburban Band on October 28. These students will perform with other students from the All-Suburban District in January. Congrats on your hard work!

Sophia Kraujalis                                       Haley Parks and Eric Walk

An incredible night of music and football happened on October 4 at Parkway South High School. The 8th grade band members from South Middle School and Southwest Middle School joined the Parkway South High School Marching Band to perform the pregame show to kick off the game. High school students helped the middle school students with marching and playing prior to the performance, and a huge thank you to the PSHS Band Boosters for providing dinner for all of the musicians.

November 12 will be the Parkway South Band Summit at Parkway South High School. All 7th and 8th grade band students have field trip forms and should get them turned in by November 6. The concert will be at 7:00 p.m. in the gymnasium at the high school. They will leave South Middle at 1:45 p.m. to spend the rest of the afternoon with the high school band and their directors. Please see the forms in your student's band folder for more details.

Helpful School Information
Arrival and Dismissal
School begins at 8:20 a.m. The door at the main entrance is unlocked at 7:45 a.m., and students may enter at that time and wait in the pavilion until they are allowed to go to their classes.

Our dismissal time is 3:15 p.m. If your child needs to leave school early, please follow these steps:

Send a note to school with your child explaining the reason for early dismissal, the time, and the name of the person who will be picking up your child. Please date and sign the note. Your child should bring the note to the front office before school in order to obtain an “Early Dismissal Pass.”

By following this procedure, your child can be dismissed from class (with the pass) and be in the office ready to go. In addition, we will not have to call into the classroom and request your child for dismissal. Calling into a class is very disruptive to the educational process.

We greatly appreciate your cooperation with this system.

Bus Passes
Parkway Buses
To ride a different Parkway bus or to get off the bus at a different stop, a student must present a note signed by a parent or guardian to the secretary in the front office before school. Students may pick up bus passes at lunch, and these passes must be given to the bus driver. Drivers will honor only school-issued bus passes. Some buses may be so crowded that no passes will be issued.

Missouri Central Buses (Students Who Reside in the City of St. Louis)
To ride a bus other than the one to which a student is assigned or to get off the bus at a different stop, a student needs two notes--one from the parent/guardian of the child who needs a bus pass, and one from the parent/guardian of the student with whom the child will be going home. Please present both these notes to the secretary in the front office before school. Students may pick up bus passes at lunch, and these passes must be given to the driver. Drivers will only honor school-issued bus passes. Some buses may be so crowded that no passes will be issued.

Visitor Management System
In the interest of student and staff safety, Parkway has added visitor check-in systems in all schools. Visitors need to show a government issued photo ID when they come to school, and then they will receive printed visitor badges with their names on them. Thank you in advance for helping us improve safety for all students and staff!

Lost and Found

If your student is missing a jacket, coat, lunch box or water bottle, it might be in our LOST AND FOUND area outside the Nurse's office.

Please stop in the front office to get a name badge if you would like to look for your student's lost item!
PTO Late Start Snack Day
Wednesday, November 20, 2019, is a Late Start Snack Day. Students can purchase pretzel sticks from Philly Pretzel during their lunchtime on Wednesday for $1.00 each. Students will need to pay with cash, as they can’t use their lunch accounts. The money earned from pretzel sales benefits our P.T.O.
