We Owe It To Our Students to Speak Out Against Racism

Grain Valley Schools Community,

Our students are tuned in to the uncertainty, fear, and anger that is happening around them. We owe it to our students to speak out against racism and to teach our young people the skills they need to recognize and correct for biases and stereotypes. The alternative is to remain stuck in fear, which is the foundation of hate. We do not claim to have all the answers and we are not interested in making political statements. Our commitment is to each of our students to ensure our schools are welcoming and safe.

Only through an insistence on equity for our children of color can we realize our vision of being the best model of student success, whose graduates are prepared to excel in a complex world. Our school district exists to support the learning and development of our community’s young people and we want ours to be a community where every child feels included.

Our school and district leaders are prepared to listen to any child or family member who sees an opportunity for growth to help each of our students feel safe, included, and heard. We are prepared to enforce policies, or to change policies and practices, to help all students feel safe and included in our schools and programs. We are stronger together.

Every student. Every day.
