School Reopening Planning

Grain Valley Schools is committed to providing a choice for our families to consider for children returning to school on August 24, 2020. The safety of our students and staff is our priority, so we have put new procedures in place to protect everyone in our schools and minimize the risk of exposure. However, the risk of exposure increases any time we enter a public setting, including a school.

The School Reopening Plan was developed using guidance from the Center for Disease Control (CDC), the Missouri School Boards Association, and the Jackson County Health Department, along with input from families and staff through surveys and planning. We hope this information helps guide families to make decisions that best suits their unique situation.

The School Reopening Plan outlines three instructional models.

In-Person Learning
All returning students are considered "in-person," unless a parent or guardian requests Virtual Learning (see the link below). Our In-Person plan includes many new safety protocols.

Virtual Learning
Families who are not comfortable sending their children to school this fall can request a Virtual Learning option. Students will receive instruction virtually (GV teachers, GV curriculum when possible), accessing learning and assignments using district-issued Chromebooks. Families considering Virtual Learning will need to complete the "Virtual Learning Request 2020 Fall" form (see the link later in this communication). For planning purposes the Virtual Learning Request form should be completed by the end of the day on July 29.
Hybrid Plan
The Hybrid Plan is a sample of what we will put in place if we need to reduce capacity of our In-Person Learning. (Parents cannot choose the Hybrid Plan, it will only be implemented if reduced capacity is needed.) The Hybrid Plan would allow for portions of students within a school to alternate between attending school in person and virtual learning.

Virtual Learning Request

Families who would prefer to have their child participate in Virtual Learning for the Fall 2020 semester need to complete the Virtual Learning Request Fall 2020 form. Click on the link below to complete this form.

For planning purposes the Virtual Learning Request form should be completed by the end of the day on July 29.

Mask Use Required
In consideration of the recommendations issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Missouri Department of Health, and the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, the decision has been made to require masks for all students and staff as we return to school in August. Current guidance allows exceptions for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing, children younger than five and persons with a specific medical condition or disability that prevents wearing a face covering.
Registration For Returning Students

Parents/guardians should complete registration for all students online (In-Person and Virtual students) by July 29 or attend the Registration and Residency Verification event at South Middle School on July 29 from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Representatives from each school will be at the event and will be able to help you complete the registration process and answer any questions.

The parent or guardian will use the PowerSchool Parent Portal to access the registration tool. Please click below to begin the registration for returning students...

  • After logging into the Parent Portal, select the student you wish to register along the top navigation bar.
  •  Select the Student Registration Icon on the left side for 2020-2021.
  • Agree to the terms and conditions.
  • Select Begin Forms.

To complete the registration process on PowerSchool, please have a current utility bill (service from June or July) available. Please submit images from both sides of the utility bill to ensure the service address and parent/guardian name are included.

If you complete this information online, parents/guardians do NOT need to attend the Registration and Residency Event on July 29.

Students become eligible to receive a class placement and/or a class schedule after the registration process is completed.

Annual Returning Student Registration And Residency Verification Event

Our annual event for registration and proof of residency for families who do not complete the process online will be held on:

Time: 11:00 am to 7:00 pm
Location:  South Middle School, 901 SW Ryan Road

Representatives from all schools will be at the event to help, and computers will be available for parents to use to complete registration in PowerSchool.

Parents/Guardians do not need to attend this event if they have completed registration online through PowerSchool.

New Student Enrollment
Enrollment of new students can begin online with instructions found under the FOR FAMILIES tab of our website. Or, these families may attend our registration and residency event on July 29 from 11:00 AM – 7:00 PM at South Middle School on Ryan Road if they would like to have assistance with the online process. Families enrolling new students should bring the items listed under NEW ENROLLMENT on the Grain Valley Schools app, or under the FOR FAMILIES tab of our website.

Families with new students to enroll who do not wish to have their child attend school in person for fall semester should still complete the enrollment process.

Families who have previously enrolled a child to begin Kindergarten for this fall do not need to do anything else unless personally requested by the child’s school to provide missing information.
Commencement Ceremony Live Stream Friday Night
Grain Valley Schools will be holding an in-person graduation ceremony for the Grain Valley High School Class of 2020 at the University of Central Missouri Multipurpose Building on Friday, July 24th at 7 p.m.  Guest must have a ticket to enter the building.  Graduates were provided with tickets to distribute to their guests.

Students, families, staff, and other guests are required to wear masks, social distance, and self-monitor for symptoms of COVID-19. Anyone who feels ill or is experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 should not attend. Currently known symptoms include: Fever or chills; cough; headache; muscle aches; nausea, vomiting or diarrhea; new loss of taste or smell; new runny nose or congestion; shortness of breath or difficulty breathing; sore throat; or close contact with a person with COVID-19 in the last 14 days.

Back-To-School Immunization Clinic

The Jackson County Health Department will be hosting a Back-To-School Immunization Clinic for Grain Valley families on July 28 and July 29 from 8:30 am to 6:00 pm, by appointment only.
