From the Principal: Welcome back!

Dear Titan Parents,

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year!  Here at Glenbrook South, we had a smooth start.  Our freshmen are finding their way around, and our upperclassmen are glad to be back with their fellow Titans.

As I begin my fifth year as principal of GBS, I continue to feel incredibly fortunate to have this leadership opportunity. I am passionate about serving students and adults with enthusiasm, thoughtfulness, and dedication.  Our goal is to provide a safe environment, challenging curriculum, and enriching extracurricular experience for every GBS student. In order to reach this goal, we need to partner with parents and keep open lines of communication.

Every year at our opening meeting for GBS staff, we view a special video created by Television and Film Broadcasting teacher Julie Benca and her Advanced Television and Film Production students. The video highlights members of our incredible staff and their reflections about their work in schools. For the first time, we are sharing the video with our parent community. Please enjoy this very special production.

If you have concerns about your son or daughter’s progress in a specific course, we recommend that you contact the teacher. If you have overall academic or social/emotional concerns, please contact your student’s guidance counselor. We are committed to working together on behalf of student success.

I welcome parent feedback at any time throughout the year. Please feel free to contact me at lfagel@glenbrook225.org or 847-486-4849. I value your opinion and appreciate your involvement in your student’s education.

With Titan Pride,

Dr. Lauren Fagel

Glenbrooks enhance safety and security communication

District 225 administrators have finalized consistent strategies for addressing urgent communications. Parents, students, and staff can expect the following in regard to safety and security communication:
• The subject line will read “GBS/GBN: Safety and Security Update.”

Safety and Security Update official email letterhead will be utilized.
• In addition to an initial phone call and email, in emergency circumstances (lockdown and school closing today), a text message will also be sent to all phone numbers listed in the student information system. If you would like to “opt out” simply text 67587 with “opt out.” You do not need to “opt in” to texts for emergency purposes.
Additional safety and security projects

More than 700 wireless access locks are being installed at Glenbrook North, Glenbrook South, and Glenbrook Off-Campus. The installation is expected to be complete by November. The rekeying of all physical locks, while transitioning to electronic door access locks for all exterior doors and classroom doors, represents the district's safety and security task force’s highest priority recommendation. Additional recommendations that have already been implemented include the addition of bullet proof glazing in key areas, construction of more secure main entrances, the addition of exterior bollards to provide safety barriers, and improved lighting at main entrances and walkways.

Parent Night in the Classroom

Thursday, September 5, 7 to 9:15 p.m.

Parents will have a chance to walk in their child's shoes during Parent Night in the Classroom. At the event, parents can follow their children's abbreviated schedules, meet their teachers, learn about their courses, and find out more about expectations and academic goals.

Freshman Parent Coffee

Friday, September 20, 7:30 a.m., Lyceum

Guidance counselors will present parents with information on their students' freshman year, including an overview of the freshman guidance curriculum, report cards, transcripts, grade-point average, academic resources, 4-year planning, testing and other useful insights.

COMMUNITY NEWS

D34 asks you to join a community conversation

As District 34 reviews options to address facility needs, they need your input. They've partnered with Polco, a community engagement platform that helps create conversations, giving the community information, and generating meaningful feedback. Here's how you can join the conversation:

  • Go to polco.us or download the Polco app

  • Enter your name, zip code, and email address

You and all of your responses are anonymous. The District sees only aggregate results, and cannot ever see how you as an individual respond. D34 will share results of any issues posted, and will use that data in making decisions about the future of our schools. For more information, visit glenview34.org/polco.

D225 IN THE NEWS

'Johns eager to continue D225's tradition of excellence'

After Dr. Mike Riggle called time on his 20-year career at Glenbrook High Schools District 225 in June 2018, district officials launched a nationwide search to find the right person to lead one of Illinois’ best districts into the future.

Dozens of candidates applied, and seven interviewed for the position. After months of searching, the district found its new leader — and he was just 10 miles away in Palatine.
