District discusses initiatives for the 2018-19 school year

At their regular meeting on August 13, the Board of Education reviewed the district initiatives recommendations for the 2018-19 school year. These initiatives center primarily on student wellness and meaningful work and include the topics of: homework, final exams, school calendar, school start time, and learning spaces.

In addition, the recommended initiatives include projects identified as priorities which include: the completion of remaining state-approved life safety projects, safety and security facility enhancements, a review of performance opportunities for students in the arts, formulation of a budget reduction plan for 2019-2021, and the process for the selection of a new superintendent.

Once finalized, the district initiatives will be posted on the website.

Board approves service agreement with research firm
The Board approved a one-year service agreement with Hanover Research to assist the district in the development, collection and analysis of surveys. Hanover Research offers technical capabilities beyond the district’s in-house survey resources, such as the ability to limit responses to one per individual and deeper disaggregation of data.

“We are seeking an independent means for gathering feedback from our school community on a variety of important topics such as school calendar, homework, and other issues pertaining to student wellness and meaningful work,” said Superintendent Dr. Mike Riggle.

The first survey is expected to be administered in the fall and will solicit input from the school community on the topic of the school year calendar. It is the intent of the district to administer the survey to current students, staff and parents in District 225 along with current 8th graders and parents from the feeder elementary districts.
