A Note from Mrs. Goodwin

I want to thank our School Improvement Council for sponsoring our Daddy/Daughter Dance and our Mother/Son Bingo Night.  These were two awesome family events with great participation!

Our School Improvement Council meets monthly and we discuss school goals, parent involvement, and our school’s Title One Plan.  If you are interested in serving on our council next year, please email Valerie West (valerie.west@kcsdschools.net).

I also want to thank our Camden Elementary Partners (PTO) for all of their dedication and hard work to prepare for our annual golf tournament.  Remember, all sponsorship forms are due Friday, March 6. Our Camden Elementary Partners (PTO) also meets monthly to plan fundraising goals for our school and various teacher appreciation activities.  If you are interested in participating on our CEP board next year, please send an email to camdenelementarypartners@gmail.com

This is the time of year when we begin planning activities, schedules and classes for the next school year.  I do not accept teacher requests, but I will accept a letter about your child’s specific needs for our class placement team to consider.  You may send letters to matia.goodwin@kcsdschools.net .  As always, thank you for supporting Camden Elementary School where we are Galloping to Greatness with a Team Spirit!

This year, CES is raising money for the American Heart Association by having an extra morning recess fundraiser.  The extra recess is $2, and students can pre-pay for the recess from March 1- March 13. The schedule for the grade levels' recess is below.  If it is too cold and/or wet outside, the recess will be postponed until a later date. In addition to free time on the play equipment, there will be other physical activities such as hula hooping and jump roping.  It is our goal to raise money for the American Heart Association while promoting physical activity. Calming Your Colt:
Helping Your Child Put on Blinders to Testing Anxiety

With state-wide testing just around the corner, testing anxiety becomes a growing concern for our children.  Testing anxiety occurs when students are under high pressure situations that create stress. High pressure situations deplete memory and working performance.  Stress is not such an icky word as we think. Believe it or not, stress can be healthy. A little bit of stress and fear can heighten our senses and bring out our best.  Students just need the proper strategies to balance health anxiety, and here are a few you can start using now.

  1. Deep Breathing:  Teach your child how to calm their body and mind (e.g., GoNoodle www.gonoodle.com).  Go Noodle is a free resource that has excellent videos to teach children how to deep breath.  They are located under the social-emotional learning (SEL) and mindfulness section.

  2. Get Rest:  Sleep is directly related to academic performance and can soothe anxiety (e.g., Develop a regular bedtime routine).

  3. Eat Well:  Limit the amount of junk food your child eats and not just on the week of testing (e.g., fruits, vegetables, avoid sweets and caffeinated drinks).

  4. Keep Moving:  An adequate amount of physical activity helps clear the mind and decrease stress levels (e.g., biking, sports, dancing).

  5. Positive Self-Talk:  A psychological reaction to tests can often be self-doubt expressed in the form of negative self-talk.  Teach your child how to rewrite the script of that little inner voice (e.g., "Today, I am doing my best" or "I prepared for this test, and I will do the best I can").

Let’s work together to calm our colts!
