February 2020
Dear Parents,
Can you believe we are more than half-way through the school year?  Our 8th graders have already started their preps for their freshman year and our 6th and 7th graders will be selecting their courses for next year as well.  The Aylor Staff hopes that this school year to date has been a rewarding and enriching experience for you and your child.  This is a good time to check your child's progress and set goals with your child for the second semester.  If concerns exist, please contact the counseling department to schedule a conference with your child's teachers.

The third nine-weeks is typically a time when teachers see declining grades due to incomplete homework, poor class work, or low test grades.  As you know the winter weather can cause issues and disrupt our school schedule.  We have had a mild winter so far, but February SNOW is historically an issue.  Please assist your child by checking their assignment book, Tyler/Parent 360 and the Teacher Google Classroom pages for current grades, homework, test, and project dates.  You can also make contact with any teacher through Tyler by clicking on the email link.  Many of our teachers send out weekly email updates for their classes as well and you may want to provide a work email or updated home email to get that information.

If your child is struggling and needs extra help, the Homework Helpers program is a great place to receive tutoring for your child in reading, math, social studies, and science every Tuesday from 3-4 p.m.  Teachers are available during the program times to assist students with their homework or to provide additional instruction in the four core subjects.  Contact the counseling office to get a permission slip and more information about the Homework Helpers.

The Program of Studies information is located on the FCPS Website in an electronic version.  Parents please review these materials with your child and work with them to make their class choices for next year as we will begin this process very soon.

Aylor students continue to be busy and successful in their various activities.  Volleyball season is underway and a variety of after school groups and club activities are available.  Please encourage your child to get involved in school activities as the opportunities arise.  Students who are involved in extracurricular activities tend to do better in school.  The Aylor Track Season is just around the corner as well.  Announcements for all of these events scroll in the cafe daily on our large screen projectors and can be found on our Aylor's web page.

Early preparations for the 8th grade end of the year dance and the 8th grade academic awards ceremony are also underway.  Dresses for the dance do not have to be a formal gown.  As a matter of fact, a nice dress suitable to wear on other special occasions is very appropriate.  We will be meeting with students to review the guidelines and sending home a form with the specific guidelines as to what is appropriate to wear for the dance.  The dance is scheduled for Friday, May 29, 2020.  The success of the dance is dependent upon parent volunteers, so please come out and help us plan a great event for our 8th grade students.  Students must be in good standing with their academics, attendance and behavior to attend the 8th grade dance.

As we move into the second half of the year, stay in touch with your child's teachers in order to keep the path to success a clear and easier one.  Our counseling department and SRO, Deputy Garrison, are available for support for many of the issues and challenges our young people are faced with.  We look forward to working with you and helping to make your Aylor experience the best possible!
