March 2019
Dear Parents/Guardians:

March is here which means we can look forward to the end of those cold and windy winter days and hopefully move some of the sickness out. Spring brings us a welcome change in both our physical and emotional world and serves to remind us that change can lead to positive growth. We must join together to foster these changes through this time by providing a solid base of expectations for positive choices. Our goal for each and every student at Aylor is for them to realize the importance of education in their lives and that their effort and hard work will result in positive changes now and in the future. The month of March brings the end of the 3rd quarter on March 14th with report cards going home on March 27th.

Our teachers have been working hard to prepare our 8th graders for the Writing Virginia SOL test that will begin on March 5th and run through March 15th. This test consists of a multiple choice section and writing prompt. It also begins preparation for the non-writing Virginia SOL testing that will begin toward the beginning of May. During the remaining months of school, it is especially important that Aylor students attend school regularly, complete their homework assignments and study every night. This will help your child do well in his/her classes and master the course content necessary to perform well on the upcoming SOL tests. Please take time to review your child’s grades and, if needed, contact guidance to arrange a conference with the teachers. Together we can develop a plan for success for the final grading period. We would also like to see our community attend the Boardof Supervisors meeting on March 27th at 7:00 p.m. This is a public hearing to help support Dr. Sovine’s budget proposal.

Spring is a very busy time for us here at Aylor. Our school musical, Beauty and the Beast Jr. will be performed on March 29th at 7:00 p.m. and March 30th at 2:30 pm and 7:00 p.m. We hope you will be able to attend what is sure to be an outstanding performance! Track practice starts toward the end of March. Please make sure your student has their physical complete and approved by this date. Physicals can be picked up in the main office. Our volleyball team is in full swing and playoffs will be the last week of March. The Regional Science Fair is the first week of March, good luck to all of our students going to the science fair. We also want to wish luck to all our students that are participating in club competitions, and band and chorus assessments during the rest of the school year. These students and teachers spend a lot of time preparing themselves for these competitions.

As part of the Robert E. Aylor Middle School community, I hope you will take the opportunity to attend as many of the upcoming Aylor activities as you can. With parents, teachers, students and staff working together we are able to make Aylor an exciting place for kids to learn, grow and just have fun. As a result of our united efforts, we are also able to share our pride in the success of each of our students. Please join us this spring and catch the Aylor spirit!

Sincerely,

Becky Harden
Assistant Principal

Speak Up, Stay Safe
Speak Up, Stay Safe

Parents, students, staff and members of the community can all play a part in keeping our schools safe and secure. If you see suspicious activity, be prepared to give a detailed report to school staff and the authorities. Pay special attention to things like: What, specifically, you observed; who you saw; when and where you saw it; and why it seemed suspicious. These details will help school staff and the authorities as they work to keep our students and schools safe. SOL Test-Taking Tips

• Get a good night's sleep!
• Arrive to school on time.
• Eat a good breakfast.
• Do not forget your glasses on test day!
• If you're feeling stressed during the test, close your eyes and take a few
deep breaths. (Your brain performs best when relaxed and calm.)
• Listen carefully to all instructions.
• Do your best on sample test items.
• When the test begins, use your scratch paper to write down anything you
think you might forget-formulas, important dates, etc.
• Read the question and think of the answer before looking at the answer
  choices.
• Go through the test and answer all the questions you know first. Then,
go back to all unanswered questions.
• Eliminate answers that you think are wrong.
• Trust your first hunch-do not change an answer unless you are sure
   you're right!
• Answer all test items!
