October 2018
Message From The Principal
It is hard to believe that October is upon us and the fall season is in full swing. We are happy to share that our House System is well underway and students and staff have shared positive feedback. It is important that we make good choices and receive the feedback to understand how our choices impact those around us. We are thankful to the PTO for selling house shirts to our students this year!

The School Improvement team has been meeting to review school-wide data and make instructional decisions in-order for us to support the growth of all students. All teachers are currently participating in a book study on explicit instruction in order to target the needs of all students as they learn and grow. As a staff we continue to learn ourselves in order to benefit our students.

We have several dates for you to be aware of in October. October 11th is the end of the 1st nine weeks. We will also be hosting our annual STEAM Night on the 11th from 5:30 - 7:30pm. Please look for detailed information coming out on our on Facebook page and through email. October 12th is a Teacher Flexible Workday. Students will not report this day. On October 24th report cards will be issued for the 1st nine weeks. Please join our PTO spirit night on the 25th at TGI Fridays from 5:00 - 9:00 pm and our PTO sponsored paint night on October 26th at Easely Created from 6:00- 8:00 pm.

Please stay connected with happennings at Greenwood Mill by following us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/GreenwoodMillElementarySchool?scrlybrkr=8743d12d

Guidance Corner

Counselor’s Corner… Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year at Greenwood Mill! This year Miss Carson will be working with students in grades 3-5 when she is here on Tuesdays and Fridays. Mrs. Hall will be here every day working with all grade levels. A big Gator thanks goes out to Chick Fil A for partnering with us to present the Core Essentials program that highlights our monthly character traits. This word for October is Contentment. Each month you will get information through Peachjar so you know what the character word is. A coloring sheet will be included if you would like to print it off for your child. Bring the coloring sheet to Mrs. Hall or Miss Carson and they will display it for the month. In addition, one student will be chosen by their class or classroom teacher for exhibiting the character trait of the month and will be invited to the counselor conference room to enjoy their lunch on a special day with others selected at their grade level. Throughout the year, we are here to support your child with their academic, social, and emotional development. Please give us a call to make us aware of how we might be able to help. Our number is 667-7863. We look forward to working with your child this year!

Music Corner
Come check out the Musician of the Month.

The Frederick County elementary music teachers would like to invite you to visit our new web page. Each month we will feature a musician in the music room to further your student’s musical experience. When you visit the web page you will have the opportunity to learn with your student about the featured musician and hear more of their music.

This month we feature Esperanza Spalding. She is a four time, Grammy award winning, Jazz musician. Take a look here:

Online Student Information Update
In an effort to save time, paper and money, Frederick County Public Schools is asking parents/guardians to use Parent/Student 360 (Tyler) (http://bit.ly/parentstudent360) between September 28 and October 26 to review and update the contact/emergency information for each of their students or to verify that there are no changes. Parent/Student 360 usernames and passwords for 2018-19 are the same was they were last year. As a reminder, e-mails have been sent over the past several weeks to all parents/guardians providing Parent/Student 360 login information. Instructions on how to review and update or verify student contact information are available through the FCPS website (http://bit.ly/studentcontactupdate). Reviewing and updating the contact/emergency information is important so the school can contact you in the event of an emergency, you can receive messages sent via the FCPS Rapid Communication System, and items mailed to you by the school, including end-of-year report cards, can be delivered. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
