Salute to Veterans
Students enrolled in the Government Service Learning Program at James Wood, Millbrook and Sherando high schools hosted their annual Veterans Day Breakfast and Celebration on November 8 at Millbrook High School. Redbud Run Elementary School students greeted the veterans as they left Millbrook following the Veterans Day Program.
Projects to Address Overcrowding and Enrollment Growth Top CIP
Constructing a fourth high school, completing an addition/renovation at James Wood High School, renovating and expanding Armel Elementary School
and renovating Indian Hollow Elementary School are the top four projects on the School Board’s 2021-2025 Capital Improvements Plan. The plan, which includes several other projects, was adopted at the School Board’s meeting on
November 6.  
New School Board Members
On November 5, three new School Board members were elected to four-year terms that will begin on January 1. Brian Hester will succeed John Lamanna as the Member at Large. Brandon Monk will assume the seat currently held by Back Creek District Representative Kali Klubertanz while Bradley Comstock will succeed Seth Thatcher in representing the Opequon District. In addition, Gainesboro District Representative Mike Lake was re-elected to serve another term.
Updated Strategic Plan and Budget Priorities Adopted
The Frederick County School Board has adopted its Strategic Plan and Budget Priorities for 2020-21. The priorities will help guide the Board’s work over the coming year and assist Superintendent David Sovine as he prepares his proposed budget for FY21. Dr. Sovine is scheduled to present his budget proposal to the Board on February 18, 2020.
Citizen Comment Sought on FY21 Budget Priorities
On Tuesday, December 3, the School Board will dedicate a portion of its meeting to planning for the upcoming fiscal year and would like to hear from key stakeholders regarding its FY21 budget priorities. A public comment period will be provided near the beginning of the meeting agenda that evening for those wishing to address the Board. The School Board meeting will be held in the James Wood Middle School library beginning at 7 p.m.
Family Engagement In Education
"Families and Schools - Perfect Partners for Student Success"November is Family Engagement in Education Month. Throughout the month, tips on how families can engage in the educational process are being provided on the Frederick County Public Schools Facebook Page. Be sure to follow the page to receive the tips and other news and information about the school division.
Student Leaders Offer Feedback
Schools Superintendent David Sovine has again convened a Student Leadership Council for the 2019-20 school year. The Council, which includes representatives from each of Frederick County’s middle and high schools as well as the Dowell J. Howard Center, provides an avenue for students to voice opinions and concerns to the Superintendent while developing some of the competencies that are part of the FCPS Portrait of a Graduate including communication; collaboration; social and cultural empathy; critical thinking and problem solving; creativity and innovation; and flexibility, adaptability and resilience. 
Upcoming Holiday Schedule
Schools will be closed November 27-29 for Thanksgiving. In addition, the school division’s administrative offices will be closed November 28 and 29.

Out of This World STEMbly
DecorativeAstronaut Douglas Wheelock recently visited Redbud Run Elementary School for a STEMbly during which he shared his story of becoming an astronaut and the importance of pursuing big dreams. The school holds STEMblys to help students learn about career opportunities in science, technology, engineering and math.

What’s in the FCPS Spotlight?
FCPS SpotlightThe latest episodes of “FCPS Spotlight” highlight some of the exciting opportunities provided to engage students in their learning. The first episode details Sherando High School’s Technology Education Program which received the 2019 Virginia High School Technology Education Program of the Year Award. The second episode details a project undertaken by students in James Wood High School Teacher Emily Barnes' Interior Design classes in which the students refurbished a dollhouse and donated it to the family of a child who’s battling cancer.  
Another I’m Determined Success Story
DecorativeFrederick County Public Schools hosted a successful I'm Determined Mini-Summit on October 19. During the event, students with differing abilities learned how they can be more flexible, adaptable and resilient at school and at home through art, movement and more. There were also sessions offered at the event for parents. The next I’m Determined Mini-Summit is scheduled for October 17, 2020.
New Hall of Famers
DecorativeSherando High School inducted another class into its Athletic Hall of Fame on October 26. The inductees included Rustin Fullmer ('98), Daniel Baltimore ('98), Marilee Eback Lake ('03), Ryan Foster ('03) and Coach Bill Stewart.

FCPS 101
The members of this year's FCPS 101 class met at Frederick County Middle School Tuesday evening to learn more about instruction. Participants heard from both students and staff as they engaged in activities designed to broaden their understanding of the school division's strategic plan Inspire 2025: A Promise for Progress and the competencies that comprise the Portrait of an FCPS Graduate. FCPS 101 is sponsored by First Bank and Virginia Property Group.
VDOE Launches New Communications Tool
The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) has launched a new service that will enable families to sign-up to receive information regarding a variety of educational issues via e-mail and/or text message. Individuals interested in receiving the information must subscribe via the VDOE website.
Free and Reduced Price Meals Program
Applications for the Free and Reduced Price Meals Program are available throughout the year and there is no deadline to apply. Anyone who has questions about the program or needs assistance completing an application is encouraged to contact School Nutritional Services at 540-662-3888 x88109.
MySchoolBucks Makes Payments Easy
My School BucksPaying for student meals, fees, activities and other purchases made through Frederick County Public Schools is simple through MySchoolBucks. The online payment tool allows payments to be made at any time using VISA, MasterCard or Discover. Parents can also view current cafeteria account balances, review recent purchases, receive low-balance alerts and setup recurring payments on a weekly or monthly basis through MySchoolBucks.
