Students, parents, staff and community members are being asked to complete the 2018 Speak Up Survey. The brief, anonymous survey offers the opportunity to share perspectives on key educational issues, particularly issues related to digital learning and the use of technology to support future ready schools. The findings will be used by Frederick County Public Schools in the planning and decision-making process concerning educational technology tools and applications. The deadline to participate is January 31, 2019.
A few facts regarding head lice -
-Head lice are a common community problem.
-Head lice are not dangerous.
-They do not transmit disease, but they do spread easily.
-Nits can look similar to dandruff, but cannot be easily removed or brushed off.
-Head lice move by crawling; they cannot jump or fly.
-Head lice often infest people with good hygiene.

Prevention & Control-
-Avoid head-to-head contact during play and other activities.
-Do not share clothing such as hats, scarves, coats, sports uniforms, hair ribbons or barrettes.
-Do not share combs, brushes, or towels. Disinfect combs and brushes used by an infested person or by soaking them in hot water (at least 130 degrees) for 5-10 minutes.
-Do not lie on beds, couches, pillows, carpets or stuffed animals that have recently been in contact with an infested person.
-Machine wash and dry clothing, bed linens, and other items that an infested person wore or used during the 2 days before treatment using the hot water (130 degrees) laundry cycle and the high heat drying cycle.  Clothing and items that are not washable can be dry-cleaned OR sealed in a plastic bag and stored for 2 weeks.
-Vacuum the floor and furniture, particularly where the infested person sat or lay.  However, spending much time and money on housecleaning activities is not necessary to avoid reinfestation by lice or nits that may have fallen off the head or crawled onto furniture or clothing.
-Do not use fumigant sprays or fogs; they are not necessary to control head lice and can be toxic if inhaled or absorbed through the skin.

If you have questions call and speak with your pediatrician or family physician.
D.E.A.R Program
The D.E.A.R program stands for Drop Everything and Read. Every day at 3:00p.m. the entire school participates in D.E.A.R.  Encouraging students to read is a high priority at Bass-Hoover.
2019-20 Kindergarten Registration
Frederick County Public Schools will be conducting kindergarten registration for the 2019-20 school year in two phases this year in an effort to make the process more efficient. The parents of rising kindergarten students who currently have other children enrolled in Frederick County Public Schools are being asked to register their student(s) for kindergarten during the early bird registration period from February 4 through March 1. The parents of rising kindergarten students who do not have any children currently attending Frederick County Public Schools should complete the registration process from March 4-8. All parents registering children to attend kindergarten for the first time in August 2019 should complete the registration process at the elementary school their child will attend. Specific registration times for both the early bird and regular registration periods can be acquired by contacting each elementary school. All children who will be five years of age on or before September 30, 2019, must register for kindergarten.
January PTO meeting will be Wed. Jan. 9th @ 4:15pm in the library.

If students have not gotten their flu shot, please do so.  We are in flu season.
Parents of 5th graders: Tdap vaccine can protect adolescents and adults from tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis. One dose of Tdap is routinely given at age 11 or 12. VA requires that before entering middle school, students are up to date with this.  Be sure to contact the school nurse with documentation that your student has had it.
