WELCOME BACK
We would like to welcome all new and returning All Stars and families to Armel Elementary! The first few days of school have been busy, but enjoyable, as students and staff begin the year together. As we look ahead to the year, please know that your partnership, presence, and support are always welcomed and encouraged. You are an integral part of the educational puzzle for your children.  We look forward to working with you and your child(ren)this school year and are excited to be a part of our students' success!

SCHOOL ABSENCES
Regular student attendance in school is critical to student's ongoing academic growth and learning.  Although teachers can provide make up work and will support students upon their return to school after absences, there is no replacement available for full days of missed direct instruction, hands on exploration, and peer collaboration.  

We ask that families limit student absences due to family trips as much as possible and instead plan to travel on holiday breaks and/or summer vacations. We do understand, however, that situations do sometimes arise that require students to miss school.

As summarized in the FCPS Student & Parent Handbook and policy number 410P, student absences are excused only for family trips that are pre-approved by school administration. Parents should notify AES administration in writing a minimum of 7 business days prior to the trip. Consideration of the number of total days missed for the trip and student's previous school attendance records will be used in the determination of pre-approval. Student absences due to trips that are not pre-approved will be noted in your child's attendance as an unexcused absence.

ICE CREAM
Ice cream will be sold in the cafeteria EVERY FRIDAY, beginning September 6, 2019.  Students who would like to purchase ice cream will need to bring in 75¢ (exact change) on Fridays. Students must give the money to their teacher in the morning, and ice cream will be distributed to them during their lunch period.

PTO PICNIC ON THE PLAYGROUND - September 27, 2019
Staff, students and parents are all invited to share in the fun, food and games.  Friday, September 27, 2019 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm.





          
REMINDER - Please Wear Safe Shoes for PE and Recess
Please remember that for the safety of our students NO flip flops/thongs, sandals or open toed shoes are to be worn at Physical Education class and Recess.

 
CAFETERIA NEWS

                                                      Link for September Lunch Menu

In all FCPS cafeterias, students are given the option to purchase “extras” from the school cafeteria at any time he or she has money in his/her lunch account. Per division expectations, all students must have this opportunity and cafeteria staff/ other school staff are not permitted to deny any student the purchase of a food item; if you do not wish for your child to purchase these items, please communicate that information to your child directly.

The following “extras” are currently offered through the lunch line:
Chips are sold Monday-Thursday for $.75, and options include Baked Sunchips, Baked Cheetos, and Baked Cheddar Popcorn. Bottled water, apple juice, and grape juice are sold every day. Water is $.50, while juices are $.75. Additionally, students may purchase a 2nd main entree which must be ordered ahead of time in the morning when selecting his/her lunch choice. An extra entree is $2.20.

Reduced-fat ice cream sales will start on Friday, September 6th and will cost $.75.  Ice cream is only sold on Fridays throughout the school year. Ice cream money will need to be sent in separately and cannot be purchased through student’s lunch account balances.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION STUDENT RECOGNITION
Our PE department would like to recognize students who are exercising outside of school.  We have two programs this year designed to recognize our student's hard work.

Exercise Tracker:
Students and parents can log any student exercise time on the exercise tracker.  This is located on Armel's website, located under the Parents & Students tab.

The Importance of Breakfast

Breakfast is important for students because…

-it improves their mood, classroom focus, memory and learning

-choosing foods that are rich in whole grains, fiber and protein while low in sugar are        best...beans, eggs, dairy

-PLEASE check and make sure your student eats some breakfast!!! 

Clinic News Dental Care
If your student has dental needs and or braces/orthodontics,  Kindergarten to 3rd grade may keep their dental supplies in the clinic.  Due to lack of space 4th and 5th grade will need to keep their supplies in their book bags/lunch boxes.

Remember if your child has strep throat give them a NEW TOOTHBRUSH after being on     antibiotics for 24 hours.

Sleep
Kids need the right amount of sleep to be alert and ready to learn all day. Most school-age kids need 10-12 hours of sleep a night. Bedtime difficulties can arise at this age for a variety of reasons-homework, sports, after school activities, TVs, computers, video games, as well as hectic family schedules. Please help your student try to get enough sleep, and make sure your kiddos are not playing video games and looking at video when they should be sleeping.

FCPS RAPID COMMUNICATION SYSTEM

FCPS Rapid Communication System Text Messages

The Frederick County Public Schools’ Rapid Communication System includes an SMS text message function.  In order to receive text messages sent through the FCPS Rapid Communication System, parents must have the phone number of the device on which they want to receive text alerts included on their child’s student record.  In addition, they must opt-in to receiving the text messages if they have not done so previously. To opt-in, text “Y” or “Yes” to 67587 from the device on which you want to receive text messages. Once the opt-in process has been completed, you will receive a confirmation text message.  


Apply to Participate in FCPS 101

Frederick County Public Schools is accepting applications through Friday, September 13 for its community engagement program called FCPS 101. The program provides parents and others with an opportunity to learn about Frederick County Public Schools and its operations, including instructional and administrative services.  Applications for FCPS 101 are available at   https://www.frederick.k12.va.us/ or at any school office.  FCPS 101 is sponsored by First Bank and Virginia Property Group
