If you need to schedule an outside appointment for your student, please try to do so after school hours. Once testing has begun, we cannot interrupt a class to call students to the office that need to leave school.

Helpful Hints for SOL testing:
-It is important that students are present and on time to school on these days and have their Chromebooks charged and with them.
-Students should get a good night's rest and eat breakfast.
-Parents should encourage your student to stay relaxed and calm during testing and take their time as there is no time limit.
We appreciate your cooperation and support.

The last day of school for the current school year is June 5.  Middle schools will dismiss at 12:15 p.m.

Any student athlete that will be trying out or participating in any sport next year is required to have an approved VHSL sports physical on file prior to the first day of tryouts.  Physicals must be dated after May 1, 2019 and will be good through June 30, 2020.  Sports physical forms are available on-line on the FCPS and Admiral Byrd websites.

Dear Parents of Rising 6th graders:

The State of Virginia mandates that a booster dose of the Tdap vaccine (Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis vaccine) is required for all children entering the 6th grade.  The school nurse must have documentation of this vaccine PRIOR to the first day of the 2019-2020 school year or your child will not be allowed to attend school until the vaccine has been obtained.

Unfortunately, this year, the local Health Department will not be going to the elementary schools for administration of the vaccine as in years past.  In March 2019, your child should have received a letter from their current elementary school explaining the required Tdap vaccine.  Please make sure that you have received the letter and that you complete the required information and return it to the elementary school nurse.

If your child receives the Tdap vaccine prior to the end of the 2018-19 school year, please send a copy of the vaccine record to your child’s current elementary school nurse to be placed in their health record.

If your child receives the vaccine during the summer, please send a copy of the vaccine record to Admiral Byrd Middle School, ATTN: School Nurse.  Your doctor may fax a copy of the vaccine record to 540-662-3890.

Please listen to all “alert now” messages in regards to the Tdap vaccine.  If there are any changes, you will be notified through those messages.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at 540-662-0500, ext. 83401.  I am in the clinic at Admiral Byrd, Monday - Friday from 7:30 am to 3:00 pm.

Thank You,

Mrs. Wendy DeMaio, RN

Transportation forms for the 2019-2020 school year were given to students on March 11 to bring home for parents to complete, sign, and return by April 12. If you have not already returned your child's transportation form for next year, please return them as soon as possible to ensure your child has transportation preferences scheduled for the 2019-20 school year.
If your child has medication in the clinic, please read the following:

· If you would like your child’s over the counter medication or inhaler sent home with your child at the end of the year, please call me, email me, or send in a written note explaining that you would like the medication sent home with your child. These medications will be delivered to your child during 7th period to take home during the last week of school with parent permission.

· If your child has prescription medication in the clinic (this includes Epi-Pens, ADD/ADHD medication or other prescription medication) parents must come to the clinic to pick this medication up, as it will NOT be sent home with your student.

Please remember that sports physicals must be completed after May 1st, 2019 to be valid for the 2019-20school year. The VHSL Physical Exam Form can be found under the Student Support Services tab on the FCPS website.

If your child receives any immunizations over the summer, please fax or send in a copy of their updated immunization record to have on file in the clinic. Thanks!
