October 2019
Dear Parents/Guardians:

Happy Fall! We welcome the fall season here at Aylor Middle School where we have some amazing things happening every day. Our Spartan athletes participating in cross country, football, and girl's basketball have been in action and will be wrapping up their seasons with play-offs and championship competitions this month. Come out and support our teams.

Our student organizations are also starting to plan exciting activities for this school year. Please encourage your student to join one of our clubs such as FFA, FCCLA and TSA. It is a great opportunity for students to get to know one another and be a part of a larger family that creates a positive atmosphere leading to better relationships and higher academic success.

We also encourage you, as a parent or guardian, to become an active participant in your child's education.  Staying connected by communicating frequently with your child and his/her teachers will help your child achieve academically. Tyler Technologies is a great online resource provided as a tool to check grades, assignments, and upcoming assessments. If you have not activated your Tyler account, it is not too late. Contact our counseling department for more information. If you have any questions about your child's progress in a specific class, call or email the teacher. Our teachers are always willing to respond to questions and concerns. October 11th will mark the end of the first quarter of the school year. Report cards will be issued on October 22nd. Please feel free to contact the guidance department to schedule a conference if you have questions or concerns about your student's academics.

We recognize that your child's education is very important to you. Our staff here at Aylor are committed to doing whatever it takes to help each child achieve success. We appreciate your continued help and open communication as we work together to successfully support your child's academic journey. Please know that the Spartan staff works very hard each day to create meaningful learning experiences for your child that will contribute to his/her overall well-being. We hope you and your child have had a great start to the school year and we look forward to the continued success of all students. Don't forget to check out our official Facebook page to see some fantastic things happening here at Aylor.

Help Boost Kids' Safety, Privacy, and Security
Tips provided by Common Sense Education

When kids go online, whether they're playing multiplayer games, using social media apps, or posting their latest creative expressions, it's important that they understand how to keep their private information safe.  With tips on how to avoid scams and protect their personal data, tweens and teens can travel all over the digital world and still be in charge of their digital footprints.

Check out these 4 tips:

1.  Use privacy settings
sit down with tweens and teens to show the privacy settings you use on your apps and devices.         Talk about why you keep certain information private or limited to a small group.  Ask them what           information they feel comfortable sharing and why.
2.  Read the fine print
Find the privacy policy of your kid's favorite app and read it together.  Is it clear or complicated?
Can you tell information the company collects and what they do with it?  Are they selling it?
     Storing it?  Keeping it safe?
3.  Discuss online scams, clickbait, and "special offers"
Share experiences of being targeted for a scam.  Have either of you ever received a fishy email
or text?  What tipped you off?  Discuss the telltale signs of a hoax, including poor grammar,
misspellings, Photo shopped images, and close-but-not-exact company logos.  And don't forget
quizzes and tantalizing pop-ups, which can disguise shady privacy practices.
4.  Understand how tech companies make money
Along with your tween, research how digital devices, social media platforms, and apps and games
get paid.  Do they sell ads?  Do they sell kids' data?  What steps can you take to limit the amount
of data you share while still using the platforms?
