2019-20 School Year to Begin August 15
The 2019-20 School Calendar has been set. The first day of school for students will be Thursday, August 15, 2019. Winter Break will begin December 23, 2019, with students returning to school on January 6, 2020. Spring Break will begin
April 10, 2020, with students returning to class April 15, 2020. The last day of school will be June 5, 2020. Sherando High School's graduation will be
June 3, 2020. James Wood High School's graduation will be June 4, 2020, and Millbrook High School's commencement exercise will be held June 5, 2020.
FY20 School Budget Update

Sovine 1415 Amherst Street Winchester, VA 22601 http://www.frederick.k12.va.us Frederick County Public Schools ...to ensure all students and excellent educationThe School Board will have to consider significant cuts to Schools Superintendent David Sovine’s Proposed FY20 Budget based on the funding scenarios being considered by the Frederick County Board of Supervisors. Sovine is seeking an additional $9.4 million for the School Operating Fund to address the School Board’s budget priorities which include improving student achievement, attracting and retaining high-quality staff, preserving assets, and supporting professional development for teachers and staff. This year’s School Operating Fund totals $168.5 million. Depending on the budget scenario adopted by the Board of Supervisors, cuts ranging from $5.8 to $8.7 million will have to be made. The cuts will impede efforts to reduce class sizes, shorten bus rides and proactively maintain school facilities.
Updated FCPS Strategic Plan Now Being Drafted
Frederick County Public Schools staff and the FCPS Strategic Plan Portrait Design Team are now focused on developing the draft of the school division’s updated Strategic Plan. The plan will address a number of priorities including student success, learning culture, strategic partnerships, and attracting and retaining high-quality staff. On February 22, the Strategic Plan Executive Business Focus Group met to receive an update on the strategic planning process and to provide feedback on the Frederick County Public Schools Portrait of a Graduate.  
 
Mascot and Colors Selected for Jordan Springs Elementary School
Based upon a vote by students and staff at Redbud Run and Stonewall elementary schools, the Jordan Springs Elementary School mascot will be wolves and the school colors will be navy blue and light teal. Jordan Springs Elementary School, which is being built in Snowden Bridge, is scheduled to welcome students for the start of the 2020-21 school year.
Preschool Registration Open March 11-22
Depending on the availability of funding, Frederick County Public Schools will be offering a preschool program during the 2019-20 school year for selected four-year-olds residing in the Apple Pie Ridge, Gainesboro, Indian Hollow, Redbud Run and Stonewall elementary school attendance zones. The program will focus on literacy and other core subject areas as well as physical, motor, personal and social development. Preliminary applications for the program will be accepted from Monday, March 11 through Friday, March 22. Applications should be completed and submitted at the preschool student’s base school. VFW Honors Frederick County Public Schools
VFW Winchester Post 2123 has recognized Frederick County Public Schools with a Friend of Our Post Award. The award was presented to Schools Superintendent David Sovine and School Board Chairman John Lamanna on February 19 in recognition of the school division's support of the VFW's Patriot's Pen and Voice of Democracy Youth and Education Programs.
Spelling Bee Winners
Congratulations to the winners of the Frederick County Public Schools Spelling Bee that was held last month. First place- Andrew Link, Frederick County Middle School. Second place- Jack Wallace, Admiral Richard E. Byrd Middle School. Third place- Delaney LaFalce, Admiral Richard E. Byrd Middle School. Alternate- Olivia Judd- Frederick County Middle School.
2019-20 Kindergarten Registration Continues

The parents of rising kindergarten students are being asked to register their child for school as soon as possible to assist with planning for the upcoming school year. All children who will be five years of age on or before September 30 must register for kindergarten. Parents should complete the registration process at the elementary school their child will attend.
State Champs

Frederick County Public Schools is home to two new state champions. Sherando High School senior Timmy Dieter recently won the Class 4 State Wrestling Championship in the 132-pound weight class. In addition, Sherando senior Isaiah Allen recently captured the state championship in the shot put at the Class 4 Indoor Track State Championship.
Young Scientists Shine
DecorativeThe Frederick County Public Schools Science and Engineering Fair was held last month and featured 218 different projects completed by middle and high school students. Thanks to the judges and other community partners who helped make this event a great learning experience for students.
Student Apprenticeship Programs Available
Frederick County Public Schools is hosting an Apprenticeship Information Meeting on March 14 from 5-7:30 p.m. at the Corron Community Development Center at Lord Fairfax Community College. James Wood, Millbrook and Sherando high school students, parents and area businesses interested in partnering with the school division to provide students with authentic, work-based learning experiences are invited to attend. AP Exam Registration
Registration for AP exams will be held in the guidance departments at James Wood, Millbrook and Sherando high schools through March 12. Those students who participate in the Free and Reduced Meals Program are eligible to have the exam fee of $94 waived if they present a copy of the Eligibility Notification Letter they received after being approved to participate in the Free and Reduced Meals Program. If that letter has been lost, a copy may be secured by contacting the School Nutritional Services Department at 540-662-3888 x88109. Suspicious activity may include: a vehicle or individual in an odd or concealed location; an unattended package or backpack; individuals seeking information about a school, its operations or security procedures beyond mere curiosity; or unusual, repeated or prolonged observation of school buildings, bus stops or students. Free and Reduced Meals Program
It’s never too late for eligible families to apply to participate in the Free and Reduced Price Meals Program. Applications are accepted at any time throughout the school year. MySchoolBucks Makes Payments Easy
MySchoolBucksParents and students can make their lives easier by using MySchoolBucks to make payments for student meals, fees and other school purchases. The online payment tool allows payments to be made on any day at any time using VISA, MasterCard or Discover. Parents can also use MySchoolBucks to view current cafeteria account balances, review recent purchases, receive low-balance alerts and setup recurring payments on a weekly or monthly basis.
