PSAT registration is from Sept 3 to Sept 13 in the Guidance office. The cost is $17 dollars. The testwill take place on Oct 16th at JWHS.                                                        TEST
From October 21-November 1, students may register to take Advanced Placement (AP) exams in the guidance department. The registration period has moved from the spring to the fall this year due to changes made by The College Board, who administers the AP exams. The cost of taking each AP exam is $94. At the time of registration, students will need to pay a minimum, non-refundable deposit of $40 for each exam they plan to take. The final balance will be $54 per exam which must be paid by March 6, 2020. Those students who participate in the Free and Reduced Meals Program are eligible to have the exam fee waived if they present a copy of the Eligibility Notification Letter they received after being approved to participate in the Free and Reduced Meals Program. If that letter has been lost, a copy may be secured by contacting the School Nutrition Services Department at 540-662-3888 x88109. All FCPS students will take their AP exams at Lord Fairfax Community College during the two–week exam window of May 4-8 and May 11-15, 2020. Drama Club News: Drama Club will be kicking off the year with our first meeting on Monday, September 9th from 2:45-4:30 pm in the chorus room. This club is for you if you like all facets of theater, including costuming, make-up, lighting, sound, and stagecraft. Please see Mrs. Legge Mauck if you have any questions.

Chorus Department: The chorus department will have their first concert on Thursday, October 24th at Millbrook High School. This concert is our annual Giving Concert in which we "give back" to our community. Admission is (1) non-perishable food item and the concert will include the ambassador choirs from James Wood High School, Sherando High School, and Millbrook High School..
Winter sports begin Monday, November 11 for the sports of basketball, wrestling, swimming, indoor track, and sideline cheer. Anyone student wishing to try out for these sports must have an approved 2019-2020 VHSL sports physical on file prior to participating.

The James Wood Yearbook Staff is offering a beginning of the year sale that will only last for a short time. The Library was excited to welcome all our returning Colonels back to James Wood and to meet the new Freshmen class! We had a lot of changes in the Library since the end of the last school year! We rearranged the layout of the Library which involved moving almost every single book and we also got new furniture! Everyone is excited to see the upgraded look of the Library with the flexible seating tables and chairs. We have also added a new Digital/Tech corner with some cutting edge technology. All of these changes were designed to make the Library a more inviting, functional, and educational space for students and staff

Our Book Club is off to a great start this year! We welcomed many new members and are excited to discuss a lot of great books throughout the year. We’re always open to new members, so let us know if you want to join in!

FCPS 101
Apply to Participate in FCPS 101

Frederick County Public Schools is accepting applications through Friday, September 13 for its community engagement program called FCPS 101. The program provides parents and others with an opportunity to learn about Frederick County Public Schools and its operations, including instructional and administrative services. Applications for FCPS 101 are available at or at any school office. FCPS 101 is sponsored by First Bank and Virginia Property Group.   
The Frederick County Public Schools’ Rapid Communication System includes an SMS text message function. In order to receive text messages sent through the FCPS Rapid Communication System, parents must have the phone number of the device on which they want to receive text alerts included on their child’s student record. In addition, they must opt-in to receiving the text messages if they have not done so previously. To opt-in, text “Y” or “Yes” to 67587 from the device on which you want to receive text messages. Once the opt-in process has been completed, you will receive a confirmation text message.
Parents, students, staff and members of the community can all play a part in keeping our schools safe and secure. If you see suspicious activity, be prepared to give a detailed report to school staff and the authorities. Pay special attention to things like: What, specifically, you observed; who you saw; when and where you saw it; and why it seemed suspicious. These details will help school staff and the authorities as they work to keep our schools and students safe. Please report any suspicious activity noted in the vicinity of schools to the Frederick County Sheriff's Office at 540-662-6168.
