Superintendent’s Proposed Budget to Address Critical Needs
Schools Superintendent David Sovine’s proposed budget for the upcoming year addresses the School Board’s budget priorities as well as growing student enrollment, increased student needs, attracting and retaining high-quality teachers and staff, opening Jordan Springs Elementary School and funding preventative maintenance projects as outlined in the school division’s Capital Asset Plan. The proposal would require an additional $10.9 million in local funding to support the school division’s daily operations. A joint meeting between the School Board and Frederick County Board of Supervisors to discuss the budget will be held Wednesday, February 26 at 5 p.m. at the Frederick County Administration Building located at 107 N. Byrd Leadership Award Winner
Alexsandra SmithJames Wood High School senior Alexsandra Smith was recognized February 12 as one of 11 recipients of a Harry F. Byrd, Jr. Leadership Award and a $15,000 scholarship. Just one award winner is selected from each of Virginia’s 11 congressional districts. This is the second consecutive year that a student attending Frederick County Public Schools has received the honor.
School Quality and Perceptions Survey Coming Next Month
K12 InsightFrederick County Public Schools is partnering with independent research and communications firm K12 Insight to conduct a School Quality and Perceptions Survey from March 16-April 10. All parents, students in grades 5-12 and school-based staff will be asked to share their candid feedback about school quality, student and academic support, safety and behavior, school leadership, family involvement and budget priorities. The results will help determine how well the school division and individual schools have addressed the areas for improvement identified through the 2016 and 2018 School Quality and Perceptions Surveys as well as current strengths and areas in need of focus. Parents will receive an invitation and link to the survey via e-mail next month.
Kindergarten Registration
DecorativeFrederick County Public Schools is conducting kindergarten registration for the 2020-21 school year in two phases this year. The parents of rising kindergarten students who have other children enrolled in Frederick County Public Schools are being asked to register their student for kindergarten during the early bird registration period that continues through February 28. The parents of rising kindergarten students who do not have any children currently attending Frederick County Public Schools should complete the registration process from March 3-31. 
Team Frederick Home Builders Receives National Recognition
A team of students representing each of Frederick County’s three high schools and the Dowell J. Howard Center recently received two prestigious awards at the National Association of Home Builders’ International Builders’ Show. The team, which included James Wood High School student Daniel Copenhaver; Millbrook High School students Lucas Guerrero, Rebeckah Chong and Hunter Knox; and Sherando High School student Dillon Hunter won the first place award for Construction Management and the Rookie of the Year Award at the show. The competition required the team to create a business proposal that included soliciting bids, determining inspection fees and developing building designs.

FCPS Preschool Applications Now Being Accepted
DecorativePreliminary applications for the 2020-21 FCPS preschool program are now being accepted from the families of eligible students residing in the Apple Pie Ridge, Gainesboro, Indian Hollow, Jordan Springs, Redbud Run and Stonewall elementary school attendance zones. Applications should be submitted no later than February 28 at the school in whose attendance zone the rising preschool student currently resides.

JSEM Construction PhotoIn about six months, Jordan Springs Elementary School will be welcoming students for the first time.  Construction of the school is continuing and many of the spaces inside the building are starting to take shape including the gym, media center, administrative offices and classrooms.
Work on Replacement Aylor Middle School Underway
Replacement Robert E. Aylor Middle School ConstructionConstruction of the replacement Robert E. Aylor Middle School is well underway. Site work is continuing and footers for the building are being poured. The school is scheduled to open for the start of the 2021-22 school year.             
FCPS Celebrates Black History Month
Frederick County Public Schools is taking time to share some of the community’s black history as it relates to education in celebration of February being Black History Month.  The information, which is being shared weekly on the school division’s Facebook page and website, was compiled by Sherando High School students as part of the school division’s equity program.
Student Scientists Shine
Science Fair 2020The Frederick County Public Schools Science and Engineering Fair held earlier this month featured 181 different projects completed by middle and high school students.  The top finishers will compete at the Shenandoah Valley Regional Science and Engineering Fair at James Madison University next month.

FCPS SpotlightThe latest episode of “FCPS Spotlight” features Stonewall Elementary School teacher Jaime Ratliff who provides her students with the opportunity to serve as guest teachers throughout the year. As a result, the students are gaining self-confidence, reinforcing their knowledge and engaging in their own learning.
School Board Appreciation Month
February is School Board Appreciation Month.  The Frederick County School Board includes seven members who devote a great deal of time serving the community in their roles as board members.  The Board typically meets twice each month and Board members welcome feedback from their constituents.

2020 General Assembly Session Continues
The 2020 General Assembly session is more than halfway complete.  To help track legislation, the school division has launched a 2020 General Assembly Web page that includes contact information for Frederick County's representatives in the state legislature as well as a synopsis of the bills that have been introduced that could impact public schools.             
FCPS 101 Focuses on Facilities Services and Planning
FCPS 101 Participants Session 5The participants in this year's FCPS 101 program learned about planning and development as well as the school division’s facilities services department during their session this month.  The group also got a behind-the-scenes tour of the facilities services department and learned about the many complexities involved in maintaining over 2.6 million square feet of space across the school division.  FCPS 101 is sponsored by First Bank and Virginia Property Group.

Free and Reduced Meals Program
It’s never too late to apply to participate in the Free and Reduced Meals Program.  Applications are accepted at any time throughout the school year.  Anyone who has questions about the program or needs assistance completing an application is encouraged to contact School Nutritional Services at 540-662-3888 x88109.

My School BucksMySchoolBucks offers an easy way to pay for student meals, fees, activities and other purchases made with Frederick County Public Schools.  The online payment tool allows payments to be made at any time using VISA, MasterCard or Discover. Parents can also view current cafeteria account balances, review recent purchases, receive low-balance alerts and setup recurring payments on a weekly or monthly basis through MySchoolBucks.
