October 2020
As many parents and guardians supported their children's learning from home this year, Google saw a big need for more resources and training for families on Google’s tools. To help, they have created the Tech Toolkit for Families and Guardians, which helps parents better understand the technology that their kids use in the classroom. Plus, they added school accounts to Chrome OS so students can access Classroom and their school files while having the safety net of Family Link. Google is aslo sharing many more product updates for families here

Don't forget about our Redbud Run website, and the Redbud Run Facebook page to help you stay up to date and informed about your child's education. If you ever have a question please do not hesitate to call our office at 540-678-1868.
Over the past two years, staff at Redbud Run Elementary have been  engaged in professional learning to increase our cultural competence  and culturally responsive practices. This process includes examining  our biases on race, ethnicity, gender, economics, appearance, learning styles, disability, and many other dimensions that have been part of our conversations.

We want to ensure that Redbud Run is a welcoming place for all our students and families each time they enter the school. To help welcome students and families we've added some new logos on the sidewalks, created a welcome wall in our front hallway, and have a focus on positive student behaviors to celebrate and encourage our students.

Please join us in celebrating and embracing the differences we all possess that make our Redbud Run school community a great place to learn every day!

With cold and flu season approaching there are several things we can do to help protect ourselves and families.

The Center for Disease Control and the Virginia Department of Health recommend the following:

• Talk to your healthcare provider now about the seasonal flu vaccination and if it is right for you.
• Take every day preventive steps like covering your cough and sneeze with a tissue or your arm - not your hands!
• Wash your hands often with soap and water - including after coughing and sneezing. Alcohol based sanitizer is also effective.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. You spread your germs and pick up other people's germs this way.
• If you or others are sick, avoid close contact to keep from infecting yourself or others.

Hey, Rockets!

Do you love our school? Do you love to draw? Well, you are in luck! We are having a dra
wing contest! You are invited to help design this year’s Redbud Run yearbook.

Students in
all grades may participate by drawing a picture of our mascot, the rocket, with an interesting background. Please draw your idea on 8 ½ x 11 paper in a vertical format, and then color it neatly with crayons, colored pencils, or markers. Completed artwork needs to be turned in to Mrs. Curtis by Friday, November 6. Student artwork will be used for the front and back covers of the yearbook, as well as several inside pages.

Start working on your idea now!
The SCA (Student Council Association) elections are right around the corner!
The voting schedule is as follows:

"A" Day Students: Monday, October 12, 2020
"B" Day Students: Tuesday, October 13, 2020

Also, we are looking forward to hosting a couple of donation drives this year!  Details to come...
During the month of October students in PE will be participating in throwing and catching activities.  Students will also be working on soccer dribbling/passing.  The class sizes are small in the gym which has allowed us to practice our social distancing.  Everyone will get their own equipment during PE class to help keep everyone safe.

PE Crew,

Mr. Ratliff and Mr. Seal

Healthy Tip -  Remember to get some exercise at home as your body needs 60 minutes of exercise every day.
A couple quick reminders…

 Virtual music lessons can be found on Seesaw and Google Classroom for Music.
 Both Distance Learners and Hybrid students receive grades in Music. Please remember to complete all of your assignments.

Please contact Mrs. Larcade if you have any questions (larcadem@fcpsk12.net)
Welcome Back, Rockets! Our Redbud Run Library is open for classes.

Please remember to look for any books which are still checked out from last school year. Other students want to read those books, too. Let’s bring them back to the library.

Some of our procedures have changed in order to keep our students and staff safer
. Students are not going to the library shelves to select books at this time. Our Pre K, Kindergarten, and first graders are selecting from a set of displayed books. Second through fifth graders are learning to use Destiny Discover to hold books for checkout. All books, upon return to the library, must be quarantined for several days before being returned to circulation. We are not able to renew books at this time, but are encouraging students to read whenever they have a chance.

We are so glad to see our students and look forward to working with all of our Rocket Readers this year!

Please keep up to date by checking the FCPS School Year Calendar

The Frederick County Public Schools’ Rapid Communication System includes a SMS text message function. In order to receive text messages sent through the FCPS Rapid Communication System, parents must have the phone number of the device on which they want to receive text alerts included on their child’s student record. In addition, they must opt-in to receiving the text messages if they have not done so previously. To opt-in, text “Y” or “Yes” to 67587 from the device on which you want to receive text messages. Once the opt-in process has been completed, you will receive a confirmation text message. The FCPS Rapid Communication System is used to contact parents in a variety of situations ranging from severe weather and power outages to other emergencies that may cause a school to evacuate, relocate or go on lockdown. The system also is utilized to inform parents when schools are closed, opening late or closing early due to inclement weather. Individual schools also utilize the system to communicate information to their school communities.
Frederick County Public Schools uses Peachjar to distribute eflyers about important school events as well as activities sponsored by non-profit and governmental organizations.  Peachjar delivers these flyers to FCPS families via email. Drop-off Procedures:
Drop-off will begin each day at 8:30 a.m. Students will need to remain in the car until staff take their temperature. Students whose temperature is above 100°F will not be allowed to come to school until they are fever free for 24 hours without any medication. Students whose temperature is above 100°F will be offered to park in a designated spot to have their temperature rechecked in 5 minutes. Please be patient. Do not drop off your children before you have moved to where school personnel are waiting to assist you. You must turn into the parking lot, join the line and wait until you reach school personnel before your children exit your car. You may also park in a parking space and walk your child to the door. Parents are not allowed to walk their child to the classroom.

Pick-up Procedures

When picking your child up after school, please park in a parking spot and bring your photo ID. You will enter through the cafeteria door (Door #3) beginning at 3:20. You must be wearing a face covering to enter the building and the face covering needs to remain on when in the building. As you enter the building, you will stop at one of the staff members to have your identification checked. Once your identification has been checked, you can use your phone to scan the QR code to sign your student out. If you do not have a device to complete the electronic form, please see one of our staff members and they will help you sign out your student on their computer. We will not have any tables or chairs set up in the cafeteria and ask that all individuals are physically distant (at least 6 feet) from others while waiting in the cafeteria for students. Only individuals listed on the student’s Emergency Contacts will be permitted to pick up students unless the school receives a signed note from the parent with the individual's name. Students will be sent home as per their current transportation form on file unless other arrangements are made with the office.  Should you need to change this, please contact the office no later than 12:00 each afternoon.

Unfortunately, we are not allowing visitors into our school building during the day, which includes parents and family members coming in for lunch with students. We will be sure to let parents knowhen we begin allowing visitors to come in to our building again.

We are currently not using volunteers in our school as we begin this school year. However, that is likely to change at some point if we are able to get students back full time. If you are interested in volunteering once we begin to use volunteers, please use this link to complete the volunteer form. All volunteers, including chaperones for field trips, must complete this form to be approved by the School Board.

Birthday Treats:
Parents, if they desire, may still provide treats for student birthdays provided they are store bought, individually wrapped or packaged, and contain a list of all the ingredients. If you have questions about whether or not the item you wish to bring meets those expectations, please call our office staff for clarification.

Pick-Up Procedures for Students During the School Day:
Students who need to be released early during the school day because they are sick or have a medical or court appointment will be picked-up at the main office. Parents or guardians picking up a child will need to come to the front door, press the buzzer to talk with the office staff, show identification through the camera, and wait outside. A staff member will escort students to the front door. During inclement weather, office staff may invite visitors to wait inside the vestibule.

Standards of Learning (SOL):
The Standards of Learning (SOL) for Virginia Public Schools describe student learning and achievement expectations in grades K-12 in English, mathematics, science, history/social science, technology, the fine arts, foreign language, health and physical education, and driver education. These standards represent a broad consensus of what parents, classroom teachers, school administrators, academics, and business and community leaders believe schools should teach and students should learn. You can access the SOLs through our school website or by using this link:
Use Leaves as Fertilizer!

Leaves make an excellent source of nutrition for growing plants. Instead of leaving your leaves in a blustery pile on your lawn, you can rip them up, mix them with soil and add them to the bases of the trees and shrubs on your lawn. If you are looking for a more time-efficient solution, you can also just dump them in the compost.
