Fall Parent & Family Engagement Conference

Join Jackson Public Schools for its Fall Parent and Family Engagement Conference. The event will be held on Thursday, September 27 from 5:30–8:30 p.m. at the Jackson Convention Complex located at 105 E. Pascagoula Street. The conference is free for JPS parents. Childcare and transportation will be provided. The deadline to pre-register has been extended! Complete the online Fall Parent Conference Registration Form or call (601) 960-8945.

Fall Break

All JPS schools and offices will be closed Monday, October 8 for Fall Break.
MDE Strategies to Improve Reading for K-3 Students

The Mississippi Department of Education will hold two of its regional meetings for parents of students in grades K-3 in Jackson on Thursday, October 11. The Jackson meetings will be held at the locations below. Session times are the same for both meetings: 6–7 p.m.

McWillie Elementary School – 4851 McWillie Circle, Jackson, MS 39206
Parent-Teacher Conference Day

Parent-Teacher Conference Day will be held Monday, October 22 at all JPS schools. There will be no school for students. Schools will be open from 10 a.m.–6 p.m. for parents to meet with teachers to discuss student progress. Report cards will be issued.

BARACK OBAMA MURAL UNVEILED
Barack Obama Mural The Barack H. Obama Magnet Elementary School unveiled a mural to commemorate its namesake on Friday, August 17. A mural of the smiling former president stands tall in the playground area at the school. The mural, by Charles and Talameika Brice, was made possible through a grant from the Greater Jackson Arts Council.

"I wanted to make sure it represented children and the souls that have passed through here and those that may come back, and it's a huge honor to be selected for this piece," said Talameika Brice.

The school's name change, from Jefferson Davis to Barack Obama, became effective this school year.

SCHOOL FOCUS MAGAZINE FEATURES LAKE ELEMENTARY FOR 'RAISING THE BAR' IN STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT
School Focus Magazine Features Lake Elementary for 'Raising the Bar' in Student Achievement School Focus magazine featured Lake Elementary School for making significant gains in student academic achievement. Under the leadership of Principal Lakeisha Sutton, the school moved from an F in 2016 to a B in 2017. Sutton and her team drew up a unique game plan around performance data for the school's teachers and students. Math teacher Jannifer Frank and English language arts teacher Tiffany Benson played important roles in maneuvering the school to a successful rating.  
JPS JOINS MDE IN RAISING ATTENDANCE AWARENESS
Attendance Awareness Month
Jackson Public Schools is joining the Mississippi Department of Education's campaign to promote regular school attendance. The statewide campaign, Strive for Less Than Five, encourages students to miss no more than five days per school year. This purpose aligns with that of the national Attendance Awareness movement spearheaded by Attendance Works—to reduce chronic absence.

JACKSON PUBLIC SCHOOLS OPENS NEW SOUTH JACKSON FOOTBALL FIELD
Officials and student athletes cutting ribbon Jackson Public Schools opened the newly restored South Jackson Football Field on Friday, September 7. JPS Interim Superintendent Dr. Freddrick Murray and School Board members were among the ribbon cutters. Forest Hill and Wingfield High Schools also took part in the program. The field will be used for home football games for the two schools. The project features artificial turf, a field logo, field markings, and a retaining wall. The project was financed through a limited tax note totaling $827,000.

 Andrea Jones and Ashlyn Madison Tate   
Ashlyn Madison Tate, an eighth-grader at Hardy Middle School, delivered the Pledge of Allegiance. She is a member of the National Junior Honor Society and Student Council, and she is co-captain of the Cheer Squad. She is on the staff of the Panther Press Newspaper. She has numerous academic honors. She aspires to go to college and become a pediatrician. Ameen Abdur-Rashied gave the Moment of Inspiration. He is a native of Jackson, Mississippi and a 1982 graduate of Jackson State University. He is an instructor of Academic Support in Undergraduate Studies at Jackson State University. He has taught music in Jackson Public Schools and at Alcorn State University. He is the resident Imam of Masjid Muhammad in Jackson.

Erica Peyton, a senior at Provine High School, delivered the Pledge of Allegiance. She serves as president of her senior class and of the National Honor Society. She plays basketball for the Provine Rams girls basketball team. She aspires to attend college at Jackson State University to pursue her career aspirations of becoming a Pediatric Neurologist. Dr. Robert William Lowry, Pastor of Fondren Presbyterian Church, gave the Moment of Inspiration. Before joining the church in 2017, he served as the State Clerk of the Presbytery of Arkansas for the Presbyterian Church (USA) and as Dean of the Chapel at the University of the Ozarks in Clarksville, Arkansas. Rob is a fierce advocate for public education and other causes

One representative is elected by the student body at each of the District's seven high schools.
