Aiken Elementary News, Events & Announcements
Dear Aiken Elementary Families,

I wanted to thank all of the Veteran’s that joined us for this m
orning’s 3rd Annual “Breakfast with Heroes” Veteran’s Day Assembly. Each year this program gets better and better and it is so nice to see our students celebrate and honor the Veterans in their lives. I would like to thank all the students involved and especially Mrs. Gray for coordinating this fantastic event.

Breakfast with Heroes

Next week, the Aiken PFO will be hosting our Fall Book Fair which includes three days of “Breakfast with Books” where students can shop with their families before classes on Tuesday 11/12, Wednesday 11/13, or Thursday 11/14. The book fair will also be open in the evening on Wednesday November 13th from 6:00-8:00.

The PFO will also be hosting Family Turkey Bingo on Friday, November 22nd. The doors open at 6:00 and the first game will begin at 6:30- this is always a lot of fun and we hope to see you there!

Mrs. Watenpool’s 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade PE classes will play their annual flag football “Turkey Bowl” games this month. All games will be played from 8:40-10:00- 3rd will be 11/21, 4th will be 11/25, and 5th will be 11/26- parents are welcome to watch their students play if they would like.

As the weather gets cooler, please remember to dress your student appropriately for the outdoor weather. As long as it is dry and above 32 degrees, we will be going outside for recess and students need to be wearing appropriate jackets, coats, hats, etc.

You can stay up to date with everything happening at Aiken by “liking” the Fred L. Aiken Elementary School Facebook page KOAikenElementary or following me on Twitter at @KOAikenElemMrT.

Dormont Elementary News, Events & Announcements
Hello there Super Awesome Dormont Families and Staffulty,

Happy Fall, y’all! I hope everyone had a successful trick-or-treating outing on the 31st, as you were dodging the rain drops and pushing through the gusts of wind. Hopefully your house is full of Reese’s peanut butter cups, Hershey bars, and Snickers. PS. If you have had your fill of Reese’s PB Cups, I know a certain principal who would be willing to take them off of your hands. 😊

It looks like fall has definitely arrived here in the 15216. Students are encouraged to wear a jacket every day, as we will be going outside for outdoor recess if the weather allows. Here are a few other little tidbits that may interest you:

Dormont Dance PartyDANCE PARTY: We had our first school-wide incentive for our Dormont students! They earned over 800 blue tickets, so we had a dance party on Friday, November 1st.  Click the image to the right for a short from our dance party. I think most of our students had a good time, though a few of them may have been “too cool” to show off their dance moves. 😊 I can’t wait to see what our next school-wide incentive is.

BARNES AND NOBLE STEAM EVENT: Mark your calendars! The Elementary STEAM Expo will be happening at the South Hills Village Barnes and Noble on Saturday, November 23, 2019 from 11a-3pm. Come out and do some awesome STEAM-related activities and check out some really awesome tech toys. A portion of the sales will go to our Elementary STEAM programs. Pssst… we may even have a few Star Wars characters moving around the store. It’s going to be awesome!

KO HIP HOP DANCE: Speaking of dance, the KO DANCE TEAM HIP HOP CLINIC is happening on Sunday November 24th, 2019 from 9am-12pm. Doors will open at 8:45am. It’s available for students from Kindergarten to Eighth grade. For more information, click here

CANNED FOOD DRIVE:  For our #kokind Days in November, on Wednesday, November 6th, we are going to kick off our second annual Canned Food Drive for the Dormont Food Bank.  If you’d like to participate, students are asked to bring in a single can of food.  The Food Drive will take place from November 6th to November 20th.  PS:  Don’t forget to wear your blue shirts on the 6th, 14th, and 20th. #bethekindkid

MORNING DROP-OFF:  Just a reminder… When you drop off your children, I ask that your child exit your car on the curbside.  This can help ensure that our adults don’t run the risk of hitting one of our little kiddos as they move around the loop.  Also, to help the “flow” of the drop-off, we ask that the children exit the car and the parent move on.
You will also see two new signs on our cement pillars that read DROP OFF AND PICK UP ONLY. NO PARKING. If there is a need to visit the school in the AM or PM, you are to park in the parking lot.  If your child is having a rough morning and needs an extra hug, feel free to park in the parking lot and walk up to the building. Your support is truly appreciated.

Have a great weekend,

Mr. Werner

Middle School News, Events & Announcements

Keystone Oaks Middle School Families,

With the close of the first nine weeks already, we are looking forward to the holiday season. As excitement builds, it is important to remind everyone about our Schoolwide Positive Behavior and Interventions and Supports (SWPBIS) program at KOMS. As our students begin to focus on time off from school and opportunities to be with family, they are not as quick to remember our three expectations at the Middle School: Respect, Responsibility, and Safety. We have posters displayed in the hallways, restrooms, and cafeteria reminding students of our expectations for their behavior. Asking your child what these are and what it means would be a great way to help reinforce expectations for behavior at the Middle School.

Part of our SWPBIS program is rewarding individual students with prizes each week and when enough tickets are earned in each grade, there is a special grade level activity. Each grade had their activity on Halloween to celebrate their continued focus on being Respectful, Responsible, and Safe!

Future of Peace Poster Contest
Peace Poster Contest
Sixth grade students designed posters for the Lions Club International "The Future of Peace" poster contest in their art classes this quarter. Elijah Hubinsky's poster was chosen as the winning poster for the Middle School and his artwork now advances to the district level competition through the Castle Shannon Lions Club. Congratulations, Elijah!

Veteran’s Day
KOMS will be hosting our annual Veteran’s Day Assembly on November 11. Mr. Kopper and our Honors U.S. History students will be making opening comments and introductions. The Young Marines will conduct the Table Ceremony for the students. Mrs. Reckless will direct our 8th grade chorus in the singing of the Star-Spangled Banner, and finally we will present our local heroes in a PowerPoint developed by Mrs. Torcaso. It is so important to have our students recognize the value of all of the men and women that have served this country.

Pitt VisitPitt Visit to 6th Grade Science
The University of Pittsburgh Chemistry Outreach group visited 6th grade classes on Thursday, November 7th to conduct a water purification lab. This same group work with our 8th grade students back in September. Seven graduate students worked with the students on a water purification activity. Each graduate student was able to work with a group of four to five students. The students had a good time and were very engaged in the activity. Thank you to Mrs. Manko for arranging this great experience for our students.
