Aiken Elementary News, Events & Announcements
 Dear Aiken Elementary Families,

Kona Ice TruckWow, time flies when you are having fun, and next week it is already Halloween. I would like to thank our PFO for hosting a great Family Halloween Dance last week and also for supporting our PBIS program and having the Kona-Ice Truck as a SOAR-prize for our students...it was so much fun! This past week has been a busy one at Aiken: Officer Bruner visited and discussed school safety, Mr. Lawhead coordinated fun Red Ribbon Week themed days, and Mrs. Hersan’s art club painted beautiful pumpkins for Halloween.

Next week we will have our annual Halloween Parade and JDRF Walk. On Thursday October 31, students will be allowed to change into their Halloween costumes (no weapons please) and parade around the Green Tree Walking Track behind the school. Parents are welcome to attend the event. Please note, the gates to the lower parking lot will open at 2:15 and the parade will start between 2:30 and 2:45 (if the weather doesn’t cooperate, the parade will take place in the gymnasium). Students will return inside the building to collect all their belongings before dismissal. Parents will be able to take their child with them at dismissal at 3:10 from the lower parking lot (like normal car-rider procedures, please send in a note so we know who is going home with a parent/guardian and who is riding the bus). Thank you for your patience and cooperation on this exciting day for our students- Happy Halloween!

As the calendar turns to November, please remember to dress your student appropriately for the outdoor weather. As long as it is dry and above 32 degrees, we will be going outside for recess and students need to be wearing appropriate jackets, coats, hats, gloves, etc.

Please note, our late bell is 8:30 AM. Students should not be dropped off earlier than 8:10 AM as we do not have enough staff to appropriately supervise students at that time. Once the first bus arrives (usually by 8:15), students wait in the gym (or eat breakfast if they would like) until they are released to classrooms at 8:30 AM. If you are dropping your student off, please make sure you do so after 8:10.

Also, please don't forget to log in to PowerSchool to review and update the contact information that is on file for your student(s). Instructions on how to do log in are available on the District's website. Please do this before next Friday, Nov. 1, when the District will send a test message through the system.

Aiken BookLastly, At the start of the school year, Aiken teachers and staff wrote a book “The Truth About Unbelievable Aiken” that I read to our students during our first day of school assembly. Through the help of Mrs. Klein and StudentTreasure Publishing, this book will be available to our students in our Aiken Library, but it is also available to purchase for Aiken families. I think it would make a great keepsake or holiday gift as each teacher/grade level created their own page to share with the students of Aiken. More information will come home in your child’s folder and order forms will be available via Peachjar, but click on the link below to see our unbelievable Aiken staff read this must-have book!

Dormont Elementary News, Events & Announcements
Hello there to the Spookily Awesome Dormont Families and Faculty,

Happy Fall y’all…. And greetings from the desk of Mr. Werner. I hope this newsletter find you happy, well, and enjoying everything pumpkin. A lot has been going on at Dormont, from Science experiments to TDA writing. From demonstrating number sense to completing our ABC Boot Camp. From Letter-recognition BINGO to Mary Poppins rehearsals. There’s a lot happening within the walls of our elementary school. As a matter of fact, here are a few highlights just for you… and you… and especially YOU!

Dormont Super 6DORMONT SUPER SIX: On a monthly basis, we recognize students from our various grade levels who have demonstrated our five school expectations on a daily basis. Each grade level chooses (at least) one representative as a role model for their fellow students. Here is a picture of our Dormont Super Six… or in the case, Dormont Super Seven. 😊

Outdoor ClassroomOUTDOOR CLASSROOM: I want to give a special shout-out to Mrs.Shannon McGee and the Dormont Garden Committee for their efforts in getting our outdoor classroom completed. It is absolutely awesome! Specials thanks go out to John Lyon, KOSD Buildings, Grounds, and Transportation Director, and the University of Pittsburgh’s “Make a Difference Day” for all of their help. Here is a picture of the space. You can find more on my Twitter & Instagram pages.

CONTACT INFORMATION UPDATE:Please don't forget to log in to PowerSchool to review and update the contact information that is on file for your student(s). Instructions on how to do log in are available on the District's website. Please do this before next Friday, Nov. 1, when the District will send a test message through the system.

HALLOWEEN PARADE: The annual Halloween parade and classroom parties will take place on Thursday, October 31, 2019. The parade will begin at approximately 1:30 pm with the classroom parties to follow at approximately 1:45 pm, with 15 minutes as a buffer for activities that may need a few extra minutes and clean up.  At 2:30, the homeroom volunteers will be able to take their child(ren) home a few minutes early. Weather-permitting, the parade route will be the blacktop around the school, into the gym, and around the cafetorium. Spectators are welcome to sit along the blacktop or on the bleachers in the cafetorium.

PFO-designated homeroom parents will be available to assist children with their costumes and make-up prior to the parade. All designated homeroom parents are asked to report to the PFO table, located in front of the main office area. Only parents that were contacted by the PFO or committee chair should be working the parties. To the parents who are volunteering for this party, be sure to wear your volunteer badge. Children are to bring their costumes to school in a bag marked with their name and homeroom number. Students are not to wear their costumes to school.

In accordance with Keystone Oaks School District Board Policy, weapons of any kind are not permitted on school grounds. Therefore, no toy weapons (bullets, guns, knives, swords, etc…) are to be included with costumes.

Working in collaboration with the Parent Faculty Organizations in each of the elementary buildings, it has been determined that foods and drinks will not be distributed during holiday parties. All treats and treat bags must consist of “Non-Edible” items such as: stickers, pencils, and erasers. This will be a standard procedure in all the elementary buildings.

With the change in the holiday party time, I am asking that parents who are picking up their children arrive at the school NO EARLIER THAN 2:40pm.  I’m hopeful this extra 20-25 minutes between the end of the party and the parent-pickup arrival will alleviate any traffic issues we may have.

Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. The staff at Dormont Elementary is looking forward to a safe and enjoyable Halloween celebration.

As always, if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the school.

Have a wonderful weekend.
Mr. Werner

Following the classroom celebrations, around 2:50, the students and staff will parade through the school, and down the street across from the school. Parents and guests are more than welcome to view the outside portion of the parade. After the parade students will be allowed to leave with their parents. The students will return to their homerooms and be dismissed by grade level.

To make dismissal go smoothly and safely on the 31st, I am asking you to complete the form below and return to your child's homeroom teacher by October 29th:

PumpkinsIn Art Integration this week, Mrs. Poe's kindergarten class learned how to draw a pumpkin. Students drew their pumpkin with a pencil, traced the lines with oil pastels, and, finally, added color and detail with watercolors. Thanks, Mrs. Poe, for sharing some of your students' masterpieces!

Middle School News, Events & Announcements

Dear Keystone Oaks Middle School Families,

Stuart LittleDon't forget! You have one more chance to see this year's Middle School play "Stuart Little." Join us at 1 p.m. on Saturday to show your support for our students and the Middle School's theatre program. All of the students should be very #KOProud of their acting ability and courage to be on stage in front of a large audience!

As we get ready for the end of October and the beginning of November we are all getting excited for Halloween. Students are permitted to wear costumes next Thursday but with two conditions: first, each grade is making this a fundraiser ($2) to have money for special activities and some PSSA incentives. Second, costumes must be school appropriate wit no masks or weapons. We look forward to seeing many funny and frightful costumes next Thursday.

Mix It Up at Lunch VideoKeystone Oaks Middle School students participated in National Mix It Up at Lunch Day on Tuesday, Oct.22. Students ate lunch (nachos - a Middle Schoolfavorite!) with their grade level, but were assigned at random a seat in the cafeteria with the purpose of meeting and connecting with new classmates. Students worked in these groups to play a diversity-themed Kahoot trivia game using Chromebooks. The kids had a great time and each lunch had a winning team that will receive a prize. Click the video icon to the right to see a video of some of the students' enthusiasm during Mix It Up at Lunch Day. Mix It Up at Lunch Day is a project of TeachingTolerance.org.

Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held on Monday, November 4 from 5:30 PM-7:30 PM and on Tuesday, November 5 from 7:30 AM -11:00 AM. If you would like to schedule a meeting with your child's team of teachers please reach out to one of the following grade level liaisons:

Quit Vaping Today: KOHS Junior share his success story in public service announcement
Vaping PSAThe CDC has confirmed 33 vaping-related deaths. A recent National Institutes of Health survey found that 37% of 12th grade students admitted to vaping. And most teens don't realize that e-cigarettes contain harmful additives and chemicals, in addition to nicotine.

Teens' e-cigarette use is on the rise, here at Keystone Oaks and across the country. But, there are success stories of teens who have quit vaping - and we have one here at Keystone Oaks.

Junior Sean Demus was addicted to e-cigarettes for three years. About a year ago he decided to take control of his life and his health. And he hasn't turned back.

Click the video icon to the left to listen to his story and learn about the MyLifeMyQuit helpline for teens.
