Aiken Elementary News, Events & Announcements
Dear Aiken Elementary Families,

Happy New Year! 2020 is off to a fast start and it feels like our winter break is far gone in our rear view mirror. It has been so nice to see our students return to Aiken with smiling faces and get right back into the swing of things.

The elementary musical the past few weeks was phenomenal! Yesterday, our entire student body got to enjoy the show at Dormont Elementary. If you haven’t seen it yet, you have one last chance tonight at 7 PM- tickets are $5 at the door. I would like to congratulate Miss Caron and all of our 4th and 5th grade students that participated in our cast and stage crew for a fantastic musical again this year.

4th Graders:
Amina Babajanov, Siena Imburgia, Natalia Rivera Silva, Taylor Schneider, Aanya Sinha, and Addison Van Goor

5th Graders:
Kanton Anderson, Anna Bittner, Kara Collins, Peter Gdovic, Allie Pfeufer, Phoebe Schwartz, Alexis Seymour, and Tyler Walters

The PFO has been hard at work planning a new evening event at Aiken. Next Thursday, January 23rd, will be the first ever “Aiken Adventure” Family Fun Night. The PFO has lots of great events planned for our students and families to enjoy together. The event starts at 6:30 and the PFO is asking families to RSVP through their Facebook page.

As always, you can stay up to date with everything happening at Aiken by “liking” the Fred L. Aiken Elementary School Facebook page KOAikenElementary or following me on Twitter at @KOAikenElemMrT.

Have a great weekend,
Mr. Thomas

Dormont Elementary News, Events & Announcements

Hello there Super Awesome Dormont Families and Staffulty,

Happy New Year y’all! Here is hoping your families had a wonderful holiday season, filled with laughter, love, and lots of leftovers.

As the winter weather has settled upon us in the 15216, students are encouraged to wear a jacket every day, as we will be going outside for outdoor recess if the weather allows.

Here are a few other little tidbits that may interest you:

ELEMENTARY MUSICAL: Don’t forget: Mary Poppins will be playing at Dormont Elementary TONIGHT. Showtime is 7p, and tickets are $5. It’s going to be SUPERcalifragilisticexpialidocious!

FLU SEASON: With flu season upon us, we are seeing an increased number of students testing positive for the flu virus. Our nursing staff wanted to remind our Dormont families of a few guidelines from the KOSD Health Services to help avoid exposing other children to possibly contagious illnesses:

  • Children with a temperature above 100 degrees must be fever-free for 24 hours before returning to school (without medication).
  • If a child vomits or has diarrhea during the night or in the morning before school, that child should be kept at home for 24 hours from the last episode.
  • If they have red swollen eyes that itch, have purulent drainage, or have a crusty appearance upon awakening, they should be kept home and see a doctor.
  • If they have a productive cough that cannot be controlled with medication they should stay home.
  • As a reminder, please remind your children to wash their hands with soap and water.

PRINCIPAL’S 200 CLUB: Check out our latest students who earned a prize as part of our Principal’s 200 Club. These students were recognized by a member of the Dormont staffulty for exhibiting one (or more) of our five school expectations. Keep it up!

LOST AND FOUND: Is your child missing a coat? Perhaps a left glove? Maybe a right sock? If so, our Lost and Found is located in the main lobby. Be sure to check it out. Later this month, the remaining clothes will be donated to a local shelter.

MR. WERNER’S SOCIAL MEDIA: Feel free to follow me on the following platforms:

As always, thank you for all you do for our kiddos and our school. Your support is greatly appreciated. If you ever need anything, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.

Mr. Werner

Myrtle Elementary News, Events & Announcements
Hello Myrtle Avenue Elementary Families,

Happy New Year! I hope that you had a fun, yet relaxing, Winter Break and that the first half of January is going smoothly (the spring-like weather sure has helped!).

It's hard to believe that the end of the first semester is next week! Myrtle students have filled our Eagle's Nest once again and will be treated to a school-wide reward next Wednesday. Keep up the great work!

If you haven't had a chance to see this year's elementary musical, Mary Poppins Jr., you can catch the final performance tonight at 7 p.m. at Dormont Elementary School. Tickets are $5 at the door. I am #KOProud of all of the students that participated in this year's production and of Ms. Harke, Mr. Naser, Ms. Caron, and the volunteers who made this year's show a success!

Speaking of spring-like weather...students will go outside for recess as long as the temperature is at least 32 degrees and it is dry outside. Please be sure to send appropriate clothing for outdoor recess.

Also, please do not forget to turn in excuses for absences and, whenever possible, a note from a medical professional is preferred. Excuses must be turned in within three days of an absence.

Keystone Oaks Middle School Families,

Happy New Year! At KOMS, we are excited for 2020! It is hard to believe we are already (three days to go) done with the first semester of the 2019-2020 school year! I look forward to the activities that are coming quickly, such as scheduling for the 2020-2021 school year, PSSA testing, Keystones, and end of the year activities. I hope this new year is filled with great opportunities for all of your children in and out of school.

KOMS Scheduling Night
On January 29, 2020 from 6:30-8:30 we welcome all 5th, 6th, and 7th grade parents to our scheduling night. You will review valuable information concerning how your child’s schedule will look for next school year. You will also have the opportunity to talk with grade level teachers to get a better idea of what courses will be like next school year.

KOMS Career Day
Career Day is scheduled for February 17th (school is in session to make up for the cancellation in September). We encourage as many parents as possible to sign up and be a part of our day when we get to highlight a variety of careers and get our students thinking about areas that interest them. Please download complete the form below and return it to Mr. Lawhead in the middle school office. I hope many of you are able to come and share your work experience with our students!

Sixth grade student Elijah Hubinsky
has won the Lion’s Club Peace Poster contest at the local level and the district level. He placed third in PA, which is very commendable! This is yet another example of how our students excel in and out of the classroom. Thank you to Mrs. Hallam for encouraging the artistic ability of all of our students.

Homerooms 104, 210, and 306 are the winners of the holiday door decorating contest. They enjoyed their prize on Thursday, January 16 with some social time and something to eat. Thanks to all of our students, and the homeroom teachers, who took on the challenge of decorating their doors with a diversity theme. Click here to watch a video highlighting all of the decorated doors!
