Aiken Elementary News, Events & Announcements

Dear Aiken Elementary Families,

Yesterday was a great day for our students as we got to have some fun for our SOAR-prize! Each grade level got to enjoy their favorite game during specials and play against our awesome teachers in the gym. We played hockey, angleball, Uncle Sam Tag, Dungeon Dodgeball, and battleship...it was a blast! Students have filled our Green Tree four times already this year and we are already well on our way to a fifth time.

Aiken will be hosting our 3rd Annual Career Day on June 1, 2020. If you are interested in sharing your career with our students, please reach out to Mr. Lawhead at lawhead@kosd.org by February 21.

Last week, due to our snow day, the PFO cancelled the Family Valentine’s Dance. It has been rescheduled for Friday February 21 (the event will still be 6:30-8:00 in the Aiken gym), we hope to see you there.

We are seeing an increased number of students with different sicknesses. Our nursing staff wanted to remind our Aiken families of a few guidelines from the KOSD Health Services to help avoid exposing other children to possibly contagious illnesses:

  • Children with a temperature above 100 degrees must be fever-free for 24 hours before returning to school (without medication).
  • If a child vomits or has diarrhea during the night or in the morning before school, that child should be kept at home for 24 hours from the last episode.
  • If they have red swollen eyes that itch, have purulent drainage, or have a crusty appearance upon awakening, they should be kept home and see a doctor.
  • If they have a productive cough that cannot be controlled with medication they should stay home.
  • As a reminder, please remind your children to wash their hands with soap and water.

Thank you for your cooperation as we all try and stay healthy throughout the long winter months.

The next program in the 2019-2020 Studio & Stage series is next Wednesday, February 19 at Myrtle Elementary. Creative Merge will give families the opportunity to explore the ways that the elements and principles of art and music are used to create original works of art and musical compositions. RSVPs are not required and families can stop in at any point in the event. Click here for more details

Dormont Elementary News, Events & Announcements

Hello there Super Awesome Dormont Families and Staffulty,

Happy Friday to each and every one of you! It’s Mr. Werner, your friendly neighborhood principal. Within this week's e-blast, you'll find information about FEBRUARY 17TH, POSITIVE BEHAVIOR THROUGHOUT DORMONT, CAMP READ-A-LOT, and EXCUSES FOR ABSENCES. So without any further ado, let's get to e-blasting.

FEBRUARY 17TH: Just a friendly reminder regarding February 17th: Students will be reporting to school on that day.

STUDIO & STAGE: The next program in the 2019-2020 Studio & Stage series is next Wednesday, February 19 at Myrtle Elementary. Creative Merge will give families the opportunity to explore the ways that the elements and principles of art and music are used to create original works of art and musical compositions. RSVPs are not required and families can stop in at any point in the event. Click here for more details

POSITIVE BEHAVIOR THROUGHOUT DORMONT: Our Dormont students are continuously being recognized for their good choices by getting their blue tickets for one (or more) of our school expectations: We are SAFE, RESPONSIBLE, RESPECTFUL, KIND, or HERE. Each blue ticket gives a student an opportunity to be recognized in a winner row/column on our Principal’s 200 Club board. Here’s a picture of our latest group of students who won:

Each month, we recognize a group of students who are role models amongst their peers. Teachers choose a representative from each grade level to be part of our Dormont Super Six. These kiddos continue to exemplify our school expectations on a daily basis. Here is a picture of our January kiddos:

To date, our students have earned over 2000 blue tickets. We’ve had two building-wide incentives: a dance party and a dodge ball extravaganza… and we are on our way to earning our third.

Keep in mind: I don’t want you to think that everything is sunshine and unicorns. From time to time, we may have a student that makes an unexpected or poor choice. That student will get some sort of consequence for their behavior… and are reminded that they can always turn their day around, no matter what time it is.

All in all, I’m really proud of our students of the choices they make on a daily basis… and of our Dormont staffulty for recognizing their good choices. Let’s keep it up!

CAMP READ-A-LOT: Mark your calendars: On February 25th, Dormont Elementary School is going to turn into Camp Read-a-Lot. The event will run from 6:30pm to 8:00pm. This will be an activity where students and their families are invited to “camp out” around the school and read together. Families can pitch a spot in the pods… in the hallway… or in the gym. The “Camp”uter labs will be open for students to take AR tests, as well. Bring your sleeping bags, pillows, blankets, and teddy bears and find a spot to read together as a family. Hope to see you there. For more information, click here:Camp Read a Lot Flyer.pdf

EXCUSES FOR ABSENCES: Just a friendly reminder: Though we appreciate the phone calls to report your child(ren) off of school, a parent note is required within three days of their return to excuse their absence. You can either send in a written note, email their teacher AND Mrs. Wareham directly, or click here for the excuse form: School Excuse Form.pdf
