It's been an exciting week in Northside ISD

Dear Parents/Guardians,

It is exciting to see students back in our classrooms this week. More than 3,300 students were welcomed in-person and more will be invited to come back soon, as determined by public health metrics. Those groups who are asked to come back into classrooms will hear from their school at least a week before the date to return. As I visited campuses this week, you could see the excitement on the faces of parents and students and staff. It was also apparent that staff was well-prepared to welcome them and that families were well-informed of the new safety procedures.

Thank you for all you are doing. We realize the challenges of virtual learning and are working hard every day to make this manageable and beneficial for families. Every school year brings challenges. And as always, the Northside ISD family embraces these challenges with anticipation and determination in order to ensure a successful year for our students. Though 2020 will probably be a year that few of us will forget, we can rest assured that we will definitely remember it as a year that we came “back, together, and better” for all students and staff.

Be sure to continue to follow all Northside ISD health and safety guidelines set in place for your campus, so we can stay safe and stay open!

Be well.

Brian T. Woods, Ed.D.
Superintendent

How to access Schoology parent accounts!
We cannot thank you enough for the support you are providing your students as we all learn more in Schoology. Now that student and teacher accounts are up and running, we want to provide you with information about your parent account. Please check your student's NISD email account on Sept. 18.

You will receive an email with your student's Schoology Access Code and instructions for creating a parent account. If you are not able to access the email, you can reach out to your child's teacher for the access code. Schoology offers parents many options to view classwork, grades, and upcoming assignments. You can also check attendance, look for overdue assignments, and communicate with your student's teachers.

School supply donations needed all year long

More than 2,500 NISD students received backpacks filled with school supplies thanks to staff members, businesses, and community partners. The Whole Child Department works all year to get supplies into the hands of students who need them.

Donations are accepted year round. Currently the list of needs includes wide-ruled and college-ruled notebook paper, composition notebooks, folders (with brads and without), pens, map pencils, markers, mechanical pencils, and three-ring binders. Donations can be dropped off at the Student Services building located at 5651 Grissom Road.

Helpful Hotlines and Helplines

NISD announces free breakfast & lunch program
Starting Sept. 14, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has approved free breakfast and lunch to enrolled Northside ISD students whether they are for in-person or virtual learners. Free breakfast and lunch will also be served at our 65 grab-n-go meal locations for community children 18 years old and younger. They do not need to be enrolled at Northside ISD. The USDA Free Meal Program ends Dec. 31, 2020.

Parents/legal guardians picking up meals without a child at our grab-n-go meal locations must present one of the following for identification purposes:

1. Official letter/email from school listing of children enrolled
2. Report cards
3. Attendance records
4. Birth certificates
5. Student ID cards

No copies are required. Just present one of the above identifications per child and meals will be provided.

Students named National Merit semifinalists
Ten NISD high school seniors from five high schools have been named 2021 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists. They are among 16,000 semifinalists nationwide in the 66th annual National Merit Scholarship Program and represent less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors.

These top students will now compete for National Merit Scholarships worth more than $30 million that will be awarded next spring. Over 90% of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and about half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship.

The Northside ISD National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists are: Bryanna Boone, Kyle Huang, and Rebecca Taylor, Brandeis HS; Riley Arredondo, Cristian Colon, and Favour Oladimeji, Clark HS; Lindsey Ran, Health Careers HS; Aidan Tompkins and Christian Watts, Jay Science and Engineering Academy; and Micah Alcala Bach, Construction Careers Academy.

NISD selected a District of Distinction by TAEA

Northside ISD was selected as a 2020 District of Distinction by the Texas Art Education Association (TAEA). The districts receiving the honor are chosen based on a rigorous 12-point rubric and are judged for visual arts advocacy, integrated visual arts curriculum, and encouraging creativity and community participation.

Only 42 (out of a potential 1,000) school districts met the high standard indicating that they are in the top four percent of districts in the state.
