Changes for second grading period accepted through Sept. 30
Families who would like to change their selection of instructional learning model (in-person or virtual learning) for the second grading cycle (Oct. 19-Dec. 18) can do so by completing an online questionnaire.

The link to the questionnaire can be found here.

Families will have until Sept. 30 to submit their change. Only families wishing to change their current learning model selection need to complete the online questionnaire.

Families are reminded that a selection of virtual learning for the second grading period means a commitment to remain in that learning model for the complete grading period.

The District has been working slowly and methodically to bring students back into classrooms since Sept. 8. Using a tiered approach, students who selected the in-person learning model in early August are returning to schools and, while not all students have returned, planning is beginning for the second grading period.

For more information regarding the instructional learning options and commitments for both, please visit our Back to School webpage.

Reminder: Schoology help available
Online Student Schoology Support is available Monday through Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. for elementary students and 6 to 10 p.m. for secondary students; Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for all levels; and Sundays from 2 to 6 p.m. for all levels.

Students can access the link through Schoology in their NISD portal with an icon that signifies Schoology Support.

Meet the first principal of Wernli ES

Principal Lori Shaw is the first principal in NISD history to open a new school during a pandemic.

Shaw met, interviewed, and hired her new Wernli ES staff via Zoom; planned for the upcoming school year with her administrative team virtually; held multiple meet-the-teacher virtual events for students and their families; and planned to do many traditional things in a non-traditional way.

The former principal from Carson ES was up to the task. In this week’s video she shares her plans as she begins her journey as principal of the 80th NISD elementary school.

Please note that this video was filmed last school year when she was still principal at Carson ES and prior to COVID-19.

Supper program added at some campuses
Beginning Monday, Sept. 28, evening meals will be offered at 56 state-approved campuses for students enrolled in an after school enrichment program.

The “Grab-n-Go” curbside feeding at 65 sites for virtual learners continues, as well as traditional breakfast and lunch options in school cafeterias for on-campus students.

As of Sept. 14, NISD implemented a USDA National Free Meal Waiver allowing all students to eat at no cost. Traditional in-building breakfast and lunches are available to enrolled NISD students; and “Grab-n-Go” locations serve lunch, breakfast for tomorrow, and supper (at approved sites) for enrolled virtual learners and community children ages 18 and younger at no cost.

View MealViewer to see what will be served for supper each day.

Food Bank needs volunteers

Northside ISD has partnered with the San Antonio Food Bank in hosting MEGA Food Bank distributions since mid-April. Each distribution supports between 1,300 to 1,700 families with food during this pandemic. Many families in our community have suffered the loss of employment and are struggling to meet the financial hardships that the pandemic have created. The food distributions have greatly helped our community.

Northside hosts the distributions on the first and third Friday mornings of each month. Approximately 230 volunteers are needed for each distribution at Gus Stadium located at Loop 410 and Culebra Road. The volunteers are asked to report between 7:30 a.m. and 8 a.m. to the parking lot at 7001 Culebra Road. The shifts end between 10:30 and 11 a.m.

Future distributions are scheduled on Oct. 2, Oct. 16, Nov. 6, Nov. 20, and Dec. 4.

If you are interested in volunteering, register here.

Need Spanish course homework help?

Beginning next week, assistance will be available for Spanish courses via the Homework Hotline on Wednesdays and Thursdays, between the hours of 6 and 10 p.m. for secondary students.

A reminder that students are able to access Online Student Homework Support under the courses tab in Schoology, the Home Access Center (HAC) under the school links tab, and in their NISD portal with an icon that signifies Student Homework Support.

2020 Census deadline is here
There are only a few days left to respond to the 2020 Census. The deadline to get counted is next Wednesday, Sept. 30. Only 66% of Bexar County residents have completed the census, and it is critical that we get as many Northside families counted as possible. As you know, an accurate census count means our community receives adequate federal funding for schools, hospitals, roads, and other vital needs for the next 10 years. Census data also helps determine the amount of state funding we receive to serve our most vulnerable students. Please remind your family, colleagues, friends, and neighbors to go to www.2020census.gov to respond today.
